Or: How I taught the love for carrots and how to grow them
As summer is becoming more than just a wish in the midst of the winter, I set myself up to prepare my friends for urban gardening. While Mother Nature does the hardest part of it, actually growing the plants, getting prepared with proper garden containers and important informations is the key to sucess.
The first thing I show my friends what to build their own container with reused plastic buckets and salvaged wooden planks. One of the best ways to grow healthy plants is to build a double-bottom garden container. And since there's nothing like a picture to explain that kind of stuff, here you go :
As you can see, this model has to advantage that your plants always get the water they need, since water goes up through small h***s pierced at the bottom of the yogurt put by capillary action. All you have to do is remember to fill the bottom tank once a while. This way, you can garden herbs, carrots, cuc**bers, tomatoes, etc. on your balcony!
If this project sparks you, I also suggest you compost or
worm compost, so you don't even have to buy garden soil.
Go ahead, do it yourself or help a friend growing his/her own food.
