Urgent Evoke

A crash course in changing the world.

Agents are starting to talk about Guilds. Anyone want to start an Education Guild? I've seen a number of people interested in how to bring more education more affordably to more places!

I am interested in education with computers and especially using Open Source code and open content for scalability.

I am also interested in education for the 20% of students that are hardest to educate. The blind, deaf, physically or mentally disabled as well as learning disabilities and behavior issues. Historically these children have been segregated, put into institutions or into special education cla**** in trailers and basements. The results have not been good.

As an engineer I see the challenge of educating these children as a challenge that can teach us how to better educate all children.

Who wants to create an Education Guild so we can figure these challenges out together?

I don't really know what it means to be part of this guild, but it sounds like a good idea. :) I'm at least interested in more information on the subject. I've worked as a teacher (computer science, web design and mathematics) and I have also been working as a student assistant for blind or visually impaired persons, so I have some knowledge of that area. In Sweden most disabled people go to ordinary schools, but often with some extra assistance.

I'll join. I do online instruction right now.

Here's an example of a social entrepreneur doing a self-sustaining school: http://bit.ly/9rt1sM . Might be helpful to figure out how to do a guild.

Sara, I think the game is evolving and nobody knows for sure but my son, who is starting the Makers Guild encouraged me to start one.

I do think its powerful to join together around issues we want to impact!

Amos's suggestion was a challenge where we write joint evidence.

I am also into this topic. Education + technology. I choose hero Deb Levine.. she uses technology to teach sex education to young people.
I also didnt know what the guild is but I think that the first step to find out are those two comments:

My vision for a guild would be something to unite and organize people with a similar interest, say an engineering guild, or an economics guild, etc. Then they can share interest related knowledge, tasks, etc.

@Amos: Actually, thats close to the medieval meaning of the world 'guild'. In medieval times, guilds were the best organizational tool to make sure that new generations of carpenters, smiths etc were trained. Today, organizations for engineers or economists are mostly more remote from the single engineer.

Have you read the book "Cultivating communities of practice", published in 2002? It's a great read and talks about modern organizations within companies or in a field which help innovation.

Caroline. I'd love to be a part of this guild, but I don't see it on the wiki. Where are you hosting the guild information?

I think the right thing to do is stick together. So lets have the Education Guild team up with Calling all Teachers. http://urgentevoke.wikia.com/wiki/Calling_All_Teachers

I would refer again to what was the Caroline’s idea: How to bring more education more affordably to more places? I would suggest to those that are interested in the idea to check on these two sources: Firstly it is a OECD report E- Learning. The Partnership Challenge. On a 26th page it is stated that “Despite the substantial level of expenditure and investment on ICT in education in recent years, there is little or no evidence that ICT yet meets the original promise of better education for more people at less cost.”
Secondly: If we are about to have a Guild it is useful to learn more about the Community of Practice. There is a quick start-up guide for those interested.
