I chose the Global Giving project to "
Train a 100 football women coaches in Rwanda". I am familiar with the power of sports to keep women out of trouble as a result of seeing a poster in my school declaring the fruits of the Title 9 legislation here in the United States, which required funding to be equally distributed among girls' and boys' sports teams, thereby opening up opportunities unavailable until that time.
I read about this in the WomenWatch newsfeed as well.
Efforts in Afghanistan are striving to employ the same dynamic for empowering women. As this article notes, "Sport can help to improve their self-esteem and self-awareness,” says
Dr. Atiqullah Amiri of UNICEF's Outpost Bamyan. “Sport teaches
integrity and self-management by setting objective standards that girls
can work to achieve.”
The reason I chose this is because I believe I can encourage my nephews and nieces--as well as my sons--to give something of their allowance toward this, because they are all avid soccer players and will appreciate and recognize the value in doing this. It will also bring to their attention the goal of women empowerment and allow us to discuss these issues when we gather for family occasions.
