LUCKNOW, India, 1 April 2010 – Santosh Yadav twice accomplished her dream of climbing Mount Everest, so it is fitting that she was chosen to address the crowd at a launch event for Meena Radio, a radio programme that aims to inspire young girls to stay in school and achieve their own dreams.
How do you change the world? How do you fix problems? Well, if you aren't even aware that there is a problem, how can you possible be expected to correct it? If anyone - male or female - is taught that they're sole worth is to do as their told and not think for themselves, why would they?
Young girls in India now have a voice. A leader and a reason to look beyond the norm. 'Meena Radio' helps to inspire young girls to be the change, and take control. By leading through example, young 'Meena' convinces her village and parents to let her study at the school. I believe that education is critical to making lasting changes in the world. Launched on International Women's day (March 8) in two states, the radio program was recently also launched in the largest state - Uttar Pradesh - and will be implemented in 7 more by July.
By speaking in Hindi, the radio programme is able to reach more of the populous and have the messages be understood clearly and easily. The more young girls we can inspire to seek education, the better our world will become.
