Urgent Evoke

A crash course in changing the world.

Here's my other Evokation idea:

It doesn't have a clever name yet, but its all about libraries. I have mentioned elsewhere an idea I have had for a very long time about a huge library for all ages that is so much more than a library. In my head it is similar to the library in the move The Pagemaster. A huge castle like place with secret doors with pathways that lead to reading rooms and craft areas, a mystery section with a smoke machine and thunder and lightening, a nature section with birds chirping and owls hooting, and a cooking section with working stoves and supplies and chefs there to help out. I think you get the idea.

Anyways this library would be the headquarters for an international movement to make libraries a dynamic and wonderful place ( I know they are already this, but I want to make them more so) which would be the center of every community. I believe that libraries are magical places because I understand the power that they wield, and the fact that anyone and everyone can tap into this power, which is what makes them truly great. Knowledge is Power, and libraries are where knowledge and therefore power is stored, just waiting for someone to come and take advantage of it. Accordingly, I think they should be given the respect they deserve, and that their outward appearance should match that of their inner strengths. A plain brick building with white walls and plain metal shelves is serviceable, but a splash of colour and innovation, as well as the funding to create more community events and lessons and concerts and talks etc. etc. would make a simple library much more recognizable as the amazing place it is. This side of the program would of course take place in developed countries and areas that already have libraries.

The other half of the program would be dedicated to creating libraries where there are none. Creating schools and having teachers in impoverished areas is great, especially for the next generation. But as they often have a fee and are reserved mostly for children, they leave the uneducated adult population out in the cold. Also because of the limited resources that school's have the scope of what can be taught is limited, just as it is in any school. The solution to all of these problems is a library. A place where anyone at at any age can go and learn about anything the library has to offer. Not only that, but books has been the ultimate no-energy entertainment system for centuries, and allows a person to escape and expand their imagination and world view all at the same time, no electricity required. I would also like to make the library a place where anyone can teach or give a lesson about anything. Need a space to teach young women about their rights? Go to the library. Need a space to educate the population on HIV and AIDS? Go to the library. Now understanding that the traditional library format may not work in rural areas, there would need to be some innovation on this front. A traveling book bus perhaps? A small hut with a small collection with a bus coming in monthly to give the residents the chance to explore the extended collection. Perhaps just a space that is introduced as one in which ideas, knowledge itself is sacred and that any attempt to sensor or disparage would be intolerable, literally profane. A place where anyone and everyone, regardless of gender, class, caste, age or intelligence can come to tap into the available power and knowledge inherent in a library. This area will require some innovation, so please give me feedback

So this is my second evokation idea, and I think I am more in love with this idea, but only because I know more about it and am planning on becoming a librarian myself. But as you might have guessed, education is the key! Let me know what you think!

Thanks for the comment, and I think that the rise of new technology is exactly why libraries need to evolve, to become something more, because what they are now is being replaced by technology. A library shouldn't just be a place where you get knowledge, but where you explore and play and share. Also, the wh*** the library is free thing, plays a big role. Of course many people are willing to pay for the convenience, but by making it more appealing to take a trip to a super cool place and get the free book you were gonna pay for, I think the library will have the upper hand. Also, I think its dangerous to rely entirely on our new electronic gadgets (of which I'm a huge fan), as they have that one huge flaw, they are in terms of usability finite. They run out of batteries, they break, they go out of date, they become passe. Books and the libraries that store them are much less finite and need to be kept around, if only as a safety measure, if we can make them soemthing useful at the same time, all the better.

defintely i have a holistic view on the matter too
i grew up in libraries
but we may need libraries that also offer virtual reality games where part of it is to go read a book etc - large sprawling games that could last maybe even for a year and players could take time over...

Oh absolutely, see that's the funny thing, so many people think libraries are these stuffy old fashioned institutions, but they just aren't. A good library is always on the forefront of new media. I know my local library has in its collection, books, cds, ebooks, dvds, videogames, graphic novels, the list goes on and on. So when that new awesome sounding technology comes out, I'd bet everything I have, libraries will adopt as soon as possible.

There's a huge group of librarians on Second Life www.secondlife.com where they meet from all over the world and I know have discussed this very issue that books last longer than gadgets, check them out by searching on a group once inworld and joining in would be a good crowd to run your idea by.

way to get your idea out there!~

consider creating a follow up blog that cuts it up into the EVOKATION format pieces. You're probably planning to do that anyway. But when you do email me for commentary. also, for your convenience, probably redundently

Katherine - I enjoy this post immensely. I suggest you check out a project called the Fun Palace, by British architect Cedric Price. It is strikes at the heart of what you are after. Sadly, it was never realized.

I recently posted a draft Evokation aimed at starting a wave of new African Libraries. Basically, they are spaces that stage a relationship between the online knowledge bank and local culture. If you'd like to check it out (and perhaps collaborate) check it out:

Fourth of July on the Lake

This past weekend was the annual celebration at the lake house in Connecticut. It is amazing that the lake is still so clear and beautiful after all these years. The watershed association has done a wonderful job protecting these waters from the damaging effects of development. The wood grill was finally ready to cook on, so we didn't miss the propane tank fueled grill anymore. The food actually tasted fresher than in the past and was easy to keep fueled.Dad was very proud of the solar hybrid…See More

Stinging Nettle

In this blog post I will focus on a plant that is abundant in our nature, and which is immensely nutritious. It's of course the Stinging Nettle. Let's start with the chemical constituents of this plant:37 % Non-Nitrogen-Extracts19 - 29 % Ash9 - 21 % Fiber4 % Fat22 % ProteinOnce the leaves are drid, their protein content can reach an astounding 40 %, which is much higher than beef, which even under the best of circ**stances can never exceed 31 % protein. In addition the Stinging Nettle consists…See More

Future

FutureToday is 2020/1/1. It is just like yesterday. The war is still continuing. It has started since 2010. In 2010, that year was a horrible year. Almost every energy ran out. Every country’s governments were crushed down at the same time. There were riots everywhere. All of the big company’s bosses were killed xdeadx in the riots. Troops fought each other everywhere. Food was bought up xawayx at once. There were no more food supplies in any shops. The economy was all crushed down. All the…See More

public servants

The exchange works directly for state and public workers and servants. It gives them credit in exchange for the amount of public work they contribute to the community. The more constructive they are based off a base rate the more credit they recieve.
