EVOKE code of conduct - taking care of ourselves

Here's my suggestion, taken from one of my own communities that I host:

To make things simple, and encourage all participants to take responsibility for themselves, we have five suggestions for participants:

1. Seek to add value (beauty, knowledge, understanding, creativity, personal experience, etc.) with all of your dialog here.

2. Do your best to avoid harming others' bodies, minds, and spirits.

3. Understand that all posts here can never be anything more than personal opinions, even if they look like facts. Even universal truths may look different from different perspectives! So, don't believe anything just because you read it here. Take responsibility for yourself, and don't do anything that might cause harm just because someone else suggested it, or even swears by it, ok?

4. Everyone has a right to share their opinions and beliefs here, and has a right to think or act in whatever way they believe is right at the time. We know that everyone is doing the best they can, otherwise they wouldn't be investing their resources in this community. No one will be banned or censored by the moderator for simply sharing their thoughts and feelings. If you don't like what someone else says here, you have the option to: not read their posts, disagree with them until you make yourself (and maybe the rest of the community) miserable, thank them for sharing their
viewpoint and move on, quit the community in a huff, or whatever other solution you believe will be healthiest for you. Mediation for disputes is also available, upon request. Email [place mediators contact info here], or create a new post in the community with your mediation request and the gist of the dispute as you see it, and we'll see what we can collectively do to keep everyone happy and healthy!

5. Commercial advertising that doesn't add any value to the community may be deleted, and posts that include any illegal material that promotes causing egregious harm to Earthlings may also be removed.

Basically, have fun, learn a lot, share the good stuff, and avoid the bad stuff. What you make of this community is really up to you. I hope you enjoy it here!

Commercial advertising? Really? I am totally missing out on some stuff and I'm glad.

This is common sense...
As I also commented to Jane, I'd just add that, whenever somebody appears to be breaking those principles, this should be brought to the attention of the network.
Unless incontrovertible conditions suggest that administrators must take action immediately (see the stupid porn case), every issue should be discussed by EVOKE's community, before a final decision is taken.

Yes, Stefano, it's so much more sustainable to have everyone be able to participate in taking care of the community.

I totally agree with this. Have you also seen this: http://blog.urgentevoke.net/2010/03/31/evoke-code-of-ethics-by-agents/

The wonderful thing about a network like this is that it is, for want of a better phrase, self moderating. If players are behaving in a way that is damaging to the community, other players tend to deal with it. There are certain times though when we have to react rapidly to problematic scenarios. We ALWAYS give players the opportunity to defend their actions unless, as Stefano pointed out, it is something like the "stupid porn case" we had to deal with last week, when we clearly have to decide on a course of action without too much democratic consultation.

Simon, thanks for pointing out the EVOKE blog post. It would be wonderful if the EVOKE leaders would take a vow to do this. But I don't expect them to be able to, as they probably are still trapped in the concept of the need to destroy things they find different and challenging to the status quo.

Also, I'd suggest that even the EVOKE administrators reaction to the "stupid porn incident" was probably an unhealthy and destructive, based on another fear of things that are different and challenging to the status quo.

I look forward to a community that truly appreciates, not just tolerates or excludes, a world of diversity of ideas. :-)

Agents, Although UE is "just a game" it is also a relection of many things that happen in the world today and how we act/react. I have posted a blog at http://www.urgentevoke.com/profiles/blogs/losing-spark - the end game is to save the world. Am I (are you) fit for the task?

@Turil we may have to collectively create such a community, rather than expect to join one pre-made for us.
Comment by Turil Cronburg on March 31, 2010 at 1:22pm
Indeed, Michael, all relationships take work. :-) You just have to decide if this particular relationship is worth the effort. To me, it is the most promising community I've ever found, because it's so full of people committed to finding real, practical, solutions, so it's absolutely worth my effort to make this community even better. But I can see how others might not see this place as being as valuable, or might not have the ability to put the effort into making it better, right now. We each get to decide what to invest our resources in, based on what our goals are for our own unique path in life.

Heh, now that I think of it, EVOKE is just like any romantic relationship. At first, there is the infatuation period, where everything seems absolutely perfect! Then there is the return to reality, where your partner's wh*** self, including the imperfections, can be seen, and then comes the test: Those in it just for the sex will bail. Those in it for a long term relationship will stick around and nurture the relationship, so that it can be successful.

Nice metaphore, Turil, but please consider the eventuality of people leaving that relationship, because deluded by their partner. That would be slightly more realistic, I guess

Fourth of July on the Lake

This past weekend was the annual celebration at the lake house in Connecticut. It is amazing that the lake is still so clear and beautiful after all these years. The watershed association has done a wonderful job protecting these waters from the damaging effects of development. The wood grill was finally ready to cook on, so we didn't miss the propane tank fueled grill anymore. The food actually tasted fresher than in the past and was easy to keep fueled.Dad was very proud of the solar hybrid…See More

Stinging Nettle

In this blog post I will focus on a plant that is abundant in our nature, and which is immensely nutritious. It's of course the Stinging Nettle. Future

FutureToday is 2020/1/1. It is just like yesterday. The war is still continuing. It has started since 2010. In 2010, that year was a horrible year. Almost every energy ran out. Every country’s governments were crushed down at the same time. There were riots everywhere. All of the big company’s bosses were killed xdeadx in the riots. Troops fought each other everywhere. Food was bought up xawayx at once. There were no more food supplies in any shops. The economy was all crushed down. All the…See More

public servants

The exchange works directly for state and public workers and servants. It gives them credit in exchange for the amount of public work they contribute to the community. The more constructive they are based off a base rate the more credit they recieve.
