Urgent Evoke

A crash course in changing the world.

Evoke is not working. I fear we have caught the wrong train(Everyone read)

So far on evoke, We have managed to change a few little things here and there...
We all have learnt a lot. We have had some excellent ideas.
But have we really done anything, that has actually changed lives, on a large scale?
I am talking of projects like Wintermute's OperationSEED, Radhika's People's World Bank and EVOKE@Kiva which aim to do so.

We talk of very few players joining evoke. I believe, it is because we have not done anything to deserve their attention yet.
We have not brought about radical change, something big enough to create a huge impact on people's lives and to get noticed, so that the people are inspired to join to contribute, and not just because of the illusion that Evoke is a 'cool game'.

Now, thanks to some unknown person's mistake, we have lost A.V Koshy, one of our top agents. His "Evoke literature project", one of the finer projects on the site, aiming at actual action, will remain a dream, as will his hopes and aspirations for this site....
And this had led to people giving up hope, and talking of leaving. I fear we might lose a chain of good agents.

Most problems arise from conformity of the people on this site...
I am talking about players who have a great idea, and think an unknown person will read their blog and try it for them....so it's just post and forget....or they make up cool sounding ideas, that they know will never work, just to get people to notice them/get power votes....

In this site of over 16,000 people we have only 30-40 agents dedicated to ACTUAL CHANGE. These people are the backbone of this site. We need to protect these people. If we fail to do so, Evoke will really become an EPIC FAIL.

If by the Evokation after may 12, we fail to implement one Large Scale idea, which would radically change people's lives, I fear we wont be different from the millions of people around us, who only 'talk' of change....and evoke will remain 'just a game'.

I am new to this site, and I am ignorant of it's finer workings, please feel free to criticize me, if you feel I have made a mistake.

Having said that, I'll catch some sleep. Its about to be 3am..

Do we need to do more? YES. I´ve seen some great ideas, now how do we get more people to collaborate in them? How can we make it easy for everyone?

Can it be casual and easy as Farmville? Yes some players can log in and learn a little, contribute a little and adding up all those little contributions we end up with an ocean of people collaborating.

Will real solutions to real problems will be generated here? Yes we have some great ideas, now we need to make it easy for everyone, I believe that is the key.

To be perfectly honest, I never expected EVOKE to change the world and I still don't. Realistically speaking, it simply cannot. Anyone thinking there will actually be world changing events coming out of this is simply deluding themselves.

That said, however, it does provide a nice framework for exchanging ideas and it will get people started. Maybe not on world changing ideas. Nobody will solve world hunger or create world peace here, but some will get a start on making small changes that will improve their local conditions, or maybe, in the best of scenarios, make a small dent in the world.

To quote The Watchmen:
[Adrian] It doesn't take a genius to see the world has problems.
[Eddie] No, but it takes a room full of morons to think they're small enough for you to handle.

The way I see it, "World Changing Ideas" is nothing but a catchphrase. Today's world problems are too complex for a 16,000 strong online community to handle, let alone one single person. What we can do here, is open a discourse on different solutions and inspire people to do more localized changes. And trust me, smaller, localized changes is how the world will eventually change. "The devil's in the details", as they say.

What radical change are you expecting in 10 weeks? This week I wrote on the missing 100 million girls in world. This a problem of immense proportions and incredible complexity and not even close to the greatest challenges that will face us this century. How strange to think that ten weeks would change the world. Ten weeks is about how long a soldier goes through basic training - consider this as basic training for potential social innovators. Many will wash out, some will go on to do things that make a difference, but to declare it an epic failure for not instantly transforming the awareness of thousands or millions?

And please, everyone - enough with the shouting through font size - it just makes it harder to read and harder to take seriously.

Guys, thank you very much, for reading my post and giving your opinion. It has truly been a blessing for me.

I believe, by correctly channeling the ideas here, we can make a huge difference in the world.
Even if it doesn't seem 'realistically possible', lets not decide, that we can't do it. We don't know what is really going happen in the end.

Thinking about what is possible, and what is not, is pointless. We must concentrate on giving our best, and hope that the God/Luck factor pulls us through.....

Thanks to you, I have discovered two huge h***s in my observation.

I was hasty, and I described the solution to be a huge 'World changing idea', which is is extremely impractical.
As Julio said,
Today's world problems are too complex for a 16,000 strong online community to handle, let alone one single person.

What we need is smaller, practical, concrete changes, involving a large amount of people. If anyone here has read Malcolm Gladwell's Tipping point, this is how we lay the foundation for bigger changes. We just have to work hard, till we reach the tipping point.

The second h***, is that I am telling people to do big things, and I don't really 'walk the talk'. Forgive me for being a hypocrite. Its a tense moment in my life now, because I am having entrance exams this month, and I am desperately trying to balance life between evoke, and studies.

But enough with the excuses, I have been tinkering with a few ideas, some of which could bring about some radical changes, if they are accepted. From today, I'll try to post atleast one idea a day. I would need your support for this, to overcome the potential flaws in my plan.

Lastly, I would thank Yumna, because it was her post that originally got me thinking on this idea..

Be not afraid of anything. You will do marvelous work. The moment you fear, you are nobody. It is fear that is the great cause of misery in the world. It is fear that is the greatest of all superstitions. It is fear that is the cause of our woes, and it is fearlessness that brings heaven even in a moment. Therefore, 'Arise, awake, and stop not till the goal is reached'.-Swami Vivekananda

Hey, don't worry. We all get down and feel desperate sometimes. It's only human.

For what its worth, your reply to one of my posts was the main catalyst in me deciding to start sharing my MMO idea in my blog.

So you see, your input is appreciated and it does have an influence on people. Like I said, we are not talking about world changing events here, but small localized ones that pile up over time.

please do not let us forget that every innovation and new creation started with ideas, and that those ideas were the result of dialogue.

the world is not the way it is because of a lack of action, but because of a plenitude of action. the main issue is that the majority of the actions are coming from a dangerous inner space, divorced from understanding, polluted by greed and wrapped up in serious delusions about individuality and value.

this abundance of action, having the head start, will almost certainly continue to lead unless we are able to reconnect to the interdependence of being, understand honestly the negative effects of viewing value systems in isolation, etc.

so, if we want to save the world, it begins with recognizing how we, personally, are either moving towards of a state of interdependence, or are still buying into the individuality scheme. this occurs primarily through dialogue.

poor people, lack of water, lack of food, uneven distribution of power...all of these are symptoms. you can fix them in one place and they will pop up in another. you cannot, however, get rid of these symptoms entirely without addressing the cause. we are the cause. our minds. our own self-involvement and self-delusion. our feeling of self-importance and entitlement.

we are all hypocrites in one sense of another. being human, we are almost all engaging with emotions and thought patterns that perpetuate the cycle of inequity and suffering. again, the actions that we can take that have the greatest effect overall are the inner actions of recognizing our resistance to what is, and bringing that to the light of our awareness, taking full responsibility for our experience and recognizing that we bring to our lives the perception which determines its value.

Fourth of July on the Lake

This past weekend was the annual celebration at the lake house in Connecticut. It is amazing that the lake is still so clear and beautiful after all these years. The watershed association has done a wonderful job protecting these waters from the damaging effects of development. The wood grill was finally ready to cook on, so we didn't miss the propane tank fueled grill anymore. The food actually tasted fresher than in the past and was easy to keep fueled.Dad was very proud of the solar hybrid…See More

Stinging Nettle

In this blog post I will focus on a plant that is abundant in our nature, and which is immensely nutritious. It's of course the Stinging Nettle. Future

FutureToday is 2020/1/1. It is just like yesterday. The war is still continuing. It has started since 2010. In 2010, that year was a horrible year. Almost every energy ran out. Every country’s governments were crushed down at the same time. There were riots everywhere. All of the big company’s bosses were killed xdeadx in the riots. Troops fought each other everywhere. Food was bought up xawayx at once. There were no more food supplies in any shops. The economy was all crushed down. All the…See More

public servants

The exchange works directly for state and public workers and servants. It gives them credit in exchange for the amount of public work they contribute to the community. The more constructive they are based off a base rate the more credit they recieve.
