Urgent Evoke

A crash course in changing the world.

EVOKE@Kiva Update: I'm turning into a Kiva addict!

EVOKE@Kiva
Issue #1 | Issue #2

Since starting a lender team for EVOKE agents on microloan web site Kiva, I've been quite busy researching into the microloan project. If you are interested in microloans and/or already a member of Kiva, hopefully the following information will be of interest to you.

About Our Team

So far we have five members of our lender team at Kiva and I would like to thank everyone who has signed up as a team member. I really hope that together we can make some real change by investing into developing economies.

If you make a loan on Kiva, please make sure to select 'Urgent EVOKE' as the team you wish your loan to count towards! Please also blog your loan on Urgent EVOKE to spread the word. If you would like to, use the tag "EVOKE@Kiva".

Team News

The first loans from our team have already been made on Kiva!

I chose Edward B. Sesay's Group in Makeni, Sierra Leone.

Photo from Kiva.org

Mr. Sesay is the spokesperson of a group of teachers at a primary school in Mabonkani village. The school was founded in 1972 by the Wesleyan Church of Sierra Leone and currently has eight teachers and 318 pupils from Mabonkani and the surrounding villages. The loan will go to pay for school fees for children, furniture, plots of land, house-building materials and investments. As I write the loan has been fully-funded and I will post when I receive any news.

Featured Loan

I would like to put forward a recommendation for anyone on EVOKE who is interested in making a loan and hasn't done so yet.

Photo from Kiva.org

The Creciendo En Fe 1,2 Group is requesting a loan for the purchase of medicine supplies. Its leader Maria runs a pharmacy in the slums of Santo Domingo in the Dominican Republic. In this area crime is a serious issue and supplies of running water and electricity are unreliable. Maria lives in a simple structure here with her partner and child. The loan will be invested in the purchase of medicines for colds, fever and diarrhoea, and Maria hopes to use the profits towards buying her own home.

@Victor Joining the team is always a good idea because it will attract more attention to KIVA and what it does within the community of Evoke players.

Also it might seem that the team is not lending a lot, but do consider that some of the members, like me for instance, were and are already lending money to people through KIVA. These loans just don't show up yet as being team members' loans because they were made by me before the team even existed. Currently I am loaning to Balawè Baka in Togo. My next loans will certainly count as Urgent EVOKE team loans.

@ Elastika. Excellent initiative.

Hey Riko, working on the EvokeForever platform evokeforever.groupsite.com for week or so now and microfinancing/kiva been a inspiration since forever for me so was going to add it and create team for platform. As was about to though this blog got noticed by one of the team, you've already created a great team with the EVOKE name in it. So thinking/suggesting maybe we can join forces? Collaborate and add it to EvokeForever Platform members asking them to join, you get current members to join EvokeForever, which again like to mention be our voluntary platform run by us all, but organised and think have great impact in future see: http://www.urgentevoke.com/profiles/blogs/evoke-forever-projects-in and links on platform incase saying EvokeForever (E4E) you have no idea what I am talking about.lol. Hope you can see the benefits long term. I will mark you as creator of that project. Please add me as a friend and get back to me.Hope you see the vision. Look forward to your response.Radz

Radhika, I can't speak for Riko, but I'd rather not see the project go away from this site. I haven't decided if I want to join evokeforever yet. As it is, Evoke is taking up an awful lot of my time and energy. I'm not sure how long I'll want to/feel able to continue.

As for the Evoke Kiva group-- that can continue indefinitely on its own-- and I hope it will. As long as it exists I'm happy to continue to assign my contributions to it.

I have to second Sarah's opinion. I prefer the simple. UE is a game, an experimental platform, a think tank that draws from a new pool of minds. I hope it's just the first of many. I've been motivated by the missions, humbled by some of works of others and had some fun. But to go on forever? I'm not sure. Innovation is a growth process. I think I'd rather see UE replayed again by new people and the people playing it now go on to a new challenge.

This isn't meant to discourage you from pursuing E4E. It's just the path I choose. I've been donating to Kiva for three years (35 loans) and am pleased to add my current loans to Team Evoke, but it stands apart from my involvement here.

Kiva is a great way to give women financial empowerment.

Lynn, read the Kiva stats on employee wages. I think you'll be surprised.

Besides, people have to earn their way too. I guess discovering that people actually get paid to work for a charity is a bit of a shock at first (I certainly felt that way); but it makes sense. If people didn't get a decent wage to do this kind of thing, no one with the necessary skills would dedicate that much time to the job. They'd be spending their time earning their living like anyone else. Then, charity ventures would halt. I'd say it's fair to have someone working for a charity earning the same amount as they would in a similar non-charitable job.

Fourth of July on the Lake

This past weekend was the annual celebration at the lake house in Connecticut. It is amazing that the lake is still so clear and beautiful after all these years. The watershed association has done a wonderful job protecting these waters from the damaging effects of development. The wood grill was finally ready to cook on, so we didn't miss the propane tank fueled grill anymore. The food actually tasted fresher than in the past and was easy to keep fueled.Dad was very proud of the solar hybrid…See More

Stinging Nettle

In this blog post I will focus on a plant that is abundant in our nature, and which is immensely nutritious. It's of course the Stinging Nettle. Let's start with the chemical constituents of this plant:37 % Non-Nitrogen-Extracts19 - 29 % Ash9 - 21 % Fiber4 % Fat22 % ProteinOnce the leaves are drid, their protein content can reach an astounding 40 %, which is much higher than beef, which even under the best of circ**stances can never exceed 31 % protein. In addition the Stinging Nettle consists…See More

All of the out of date foodstuffs have been automaticaly thrown away by the fridge, they will be recycled tomorrow as animal feed or something. I see i have organic local eggs and some local cheese. Future

FutureToday is 2020/1/1. It is just like yesterday. The war is still continuing. It has started since 2010. In 2010, that year was a horrible year. Almost every energy ran out. Every country’s governments were crushed down at the same time. There were riots everywhere. All of the big company’s bosses were killed xdeadx in the riots. Troops fought each other everywhere. Food was bought up xawayx at once. There were no more food supplies in any shops. The economy was all crushed down. All the…See More

public servants

The exchange works directly for state and public workers and servants. It gives them credit in exchange for the amount of public work they contribute to the community. The more constructive they are based off a base rate the more credit they recieve.
