Urgent Evoke

A crash course in changing the world.

I have thought about starting an EVOKE guild ever since I found out about the site and registered.

What good is an immersive social game without guilds?

So, I would like to call out to other EVOKE agents: Are you interested in joining our guild?

Just like in other games, there are differences between guilds on EVOKE. Actually, I haven't heard of other guilds yet, so I suppose (for now) that this is the first guild. But yes, there will be different types of guilds. Some are casual or social, others are semi-casual, and others are hard-core, always aiming to be at the bleeding edge.

I suppose our guild will be a mix of semi-casual and hard-core.

There are currently three members:

Agent Kristiansen (me)
- and two friends of mine who haven't joined EVOKE yet but who I am working on encouraging to join this site. They actually prefer to be incognito...

The naming of this guild is still hotly discussed, but one of the suggestions are AWAKE. The main reason why the opponents dont like this name is that it resembles EVOKE too much. For me, that is part of the fun :) But yeah, I don't want anyone to be confused.

AWAKE is an acronym for
Awareness
World-wide
A...
Knowledge
Evolution

The third letter, A..., is a key element of the guild which only high-ranking officers will know and develop upon.

But again, that is only one of several guild names which we are discussing.

A bit about this guild
This guild will be awake. We will gather information, synthesize said information from a myriad of different sources, publish EVOKEguides for other agents, and also aim for excellence in what we as a guild do ourselves.

We aim to have members from all continents, meaning that at every hour of the day, there is a good chance that some of our members are awake, aware, and are both evolving themselves and helping others evolve.

We will be transparent about who we are (mostly) and what we stand for (all the time), and we will collaborate with other guilds and EVOKE organizations as needed.

So, there you go. This is one of my EVOKE goals - to be part of the leadership of an EVOKE guild.

Fantastic idea. I wonder how many guilds will emerge over the course of this adventure. Good luck!

The "A" stands for "and" doesn't it. J/K Interesting idea I look forward toseeing how it evolves.

@Robert: Yeah, I also wonder how many guilds will evolve. I think that conceptually speaking knowing that there Are other guilds, this will help. This is also an example showing how the user interface and the symbols/language of the site itself can encourage certain actions, and discourage others. Actually, a lot of the features on this site is about Personal excellence. What powers YOU have. At the same time, for instance the "Top Agents" page says "Use this leaderboard to find powerful allies you can team up with". But the system itself doesnt give ways for us to create guilds. No charter to sign (like in WoW), no UI which specifically leads to it. So - we need to create that ourselves.

@Marcus: hah! it would be funny if the A was simply for 'and' ;) yeah, it will be interesting. social experimentation within an ARG

@Marcinina hm, I decided to wait a bit with that, but yes that is definitely part of the strategy for AWAKE (or whatever the guild will be called). Thanks :)

I just want to mention, because of the way the discussion board is organized, it is very hard to follow. It's great if I want to check out the active conversations, but if I want to follow a particular discussion thread over time, or if I'm looking for specific posters or content, it's very easy to get lost. I think the discussion board still needs a lot of work structurally before it will really be useful.

This seems intriguing, but I'm a little unclear on what the guild actually does. From your short description, it kind of sounds like you would synthesize and connect various sources, and create some sort of digest? Is that correct? Is there more?

I'm looking forward to guilds becoming a big thing. It seems like a great way to get like-minded people to collaborate in and organized and effective way. Good thinking!

@TGEP: Yeah, the discussion board can be kind of confusing, but thats part of the way the system works now. I guess it will be improved with time :)

@Amos: Good questions! To be honest, we are going to have to invent our way as we walk it. I have never really gotten involved with ARGs before, but I have both played other online games as well as been involved with different kinds of organizations, both Norwegian as well as international ones. And since there were no other guilds on EVOKE when I started thinking about having a guild here, well, there really isn't much to look for in terms of 'best practice'. Your 'is there more'? is perfect, hah.

Well, let's brainstorm a bit. One of my easrliest thoughts when I thought about an EVOKE guild was localized challenges. That is, if we for instance have two members from Johannesburg, at some point, then the guild can choose to follow these two members, both in terms of support, giving them ideas and resources and helping them out, and also sort of making an internal case study of our work with them, and their own work. So, for instance, let's assume that one of our Johannesburg members has a digital camera, a digital Ixus with video feature. The guild would then do some research, and then the guild would assign those two with a task. The success of their task is primarily up to the two of them, but its actually a team effort. As such, other members are invested in their task. It could be to interview someone about criticism related to the 2010 World Cup - how is criticism dealt with in the South African media?

The assignment is of course dealing with goals at least one of the Johannesburg members have - like "I want to be a journalist" or something like that. The assignment, when done, is shared with the guild members, and after a small delay also shared with the rest of EVOKE.

What is the difference between the guild giving this extra assignment, and the assignments that are coming every week and which will be identical for all? Well, first of all, there is a personal support network surrounding the ones doing the assignment. The prizes for excellent work can be individualized as well. Teamwork will hopefully be strengthened as a part of this process.

This is just one scenario of 'is there more?' :)

Again, I hope other guilds also get established.

My vision for a guild would be something to unite and organize people with a similar interest, say an engineering guild, or an economics guild, etc. Then they can share interest related knowledge, tasks, etc.
Comment by Raymond M. Kristiansen on March 6, 2010 at 5:52am
@Amos: Actually, thats close to the medieval meaning of the world 'guild'. In medieval times, guilds were the best organizational tool to make sure that new generations of carpenters, smiths etc were trained. Today, organizations for engineers or economists are mostly more remote from the single engineer.

Have you read the book "Cultivating communities of practice", published in 2002? It's a great read and talks about modern organizations within companies or in a field which help innovation.

This is awesome.

I've loved guilds since the Ultimate Online days.

I'll definitely be looking to make/participate in a guild. I'll see if I can get some of my local crew involved in this.

Yo Raymond! Make a section on the Evoke wiki dedicated to Guilds..oops! I already did. Well add some content then!

Cheers!

Fourth of July on the Lake

This past weekend was the annual celebration at the lake house in Connecticut. It is amazing that the lake is still so clear and beautiful after all these years. The watershed association has done a wonderful job protecting these waters from the damaging effects of development. The wood grill was finally ready to cook on, so we didn't miss the propane tank fueled grill anymore. The food actually tasted fresher than in the past and was easy to keep fueled.Dad was very proud of the solar hybrid…See More

Stinging Nettle

In this blog post I will focus on a plant that is abundant in our nature, and which is immensely nutritious. It's of course the Stinging Nettle. Let's start with the chemical constituents of this plant:37 % Non-Nitrogen-Extracts19 - 29 % Ash9 - 21 % Fiber4 % Fat22 % ProteinOnce the leaves are drid, their protein content can reach an astounding 40 %, which is much higher than beef, which even under the best of circ**stances can never exceed 31 % protein. Future

FutureToday is 2020/1/1. It is just like yesterday. The war is still continuing. It has started since 2010. In 2010, that year was a horrible year. Almost every energy ran out. Every country’s governments were crushed down at the same time. There were riots everywhere. All of the big company’s bosses were killed xdeadx in the riots. Troops fought each other everywhere. Food was bought up xawayx at once. There were no more food supplies in any shops. The economy was all crushed down. All the…See More

public servants

The exchange works directly for state and public workers and servants. It gives them credit in exchange for the amount of public work they contribute to the community. The more constructive they are based off a base rate the more credit they recieve.
