"Ending Harmful Practices through Community-led Social Change in
Se... because the issue of FGM/C has always been a very important one for me. The organisation Tostan is one of many that are working on the elimination of FGM/C in Africa. According to the story Tostan was most effictive on this although FGM/C isn't the main focus of this organisation. Tostan's not trying to patronise communities but to empower them to make their own decions based on profound informations. Abonding such deeply rooted practises as FGM/C can't be acchieved by simply telling people what to do! They need to see why it is wrong or unnecessary! They need to understand and they need to make a decision in order to perform social change.
I think the given success of this community empowerment approach clearly shows the importance of education and accurate information - not only regarding the issue of FGM/C or women's rights.
On the Tostan's website there's a lot of information on other programms and accordingly communitly-led successes
