I've always believed that God cared about the earth He created, and He cares what we do with it. I believe He feels anguish to see trash in rivers and trees cut down to make strip malls that never get used. There are a lot of churches of every creed and denomination who are out there working together to feed the hungry and clothe the poor, and I commend them. But what about planting trees and considering the impact each of us individually has on our environment? Not so much.
My friend
Jonathan Merritt has been causing quite a stir in the evangelical Christian community with his passion for the environment. His new book,
Green Like God, comes out in a couple of weeks. I've read the first few chapters, and I find his insight startling, and yet thoughtful and solid. I read his blog regularly, and keep up with many of his articles in Relevant magazine and even the Atlanta Journal-Constitution. His ideas about conservation aren't really new or original, but he's changing a group of people often afraid of change and afraid to consider the subject of global impact.
I did drop him a message, but he hasn't had a chance to respond yet. I'll post his response when I get it.
