Urgent Evoke

A crash course in changing the world.

According to a recent government decree, from January 2010 no one in the City of Dushanbe can have livestock including live poultry in their house. The reasoning being such practices were leading to high incidence of flies, which according to the Ministry of Health can cause and transmit disease. The KGB or what used to be the KGB is actively enforcing the decree strictly penalizing violators. Laudable or laughable, you decide.

Live animals in households are a common sight in developing countries as they can be a significant asset for vulnerable households and serve as another source for augmenting family income - through selling milk, fresh eggs and such. This is particularly relevant here in Tajikistan where unofficially the unemployment rate is close to 30 per cent and almost 64% of the population live on less than $2 a day (for more details see previous http://www.urgentevoke.com/profiles/blogs/understand-todays-realityhttp://www.urgentevoke.com/profiles/blogs/understand-todays-reality Until the passage of the new law, I was a regular customer of a widowed neighbor who supplied me with fresh eggs from home raised hens which needless to say tasted much better than the farmed egg variety found in the local bazaars.

Yet another of my neighbors has also been affected by the same decree. When I first moved into the neighborhood I mistook him for the garbage man since I noticed him collecting trash from all the neighboring houses. Later I was surprised to learn that he owned the house next to mine and went around the neighborhood to collect the organic refuse which he used to feed his cow. (In the summer, my children would rush off with their watermelon rinds to his house to feed the cow!) This arrangement worked well for many since it reduced the hassle of them having to walk the trash to the dumpster which is a ways off.

Since January, a strange silence has descended upon our neighborhood. No longer do we wake to the sound of roosters in the morning. Absent as well is the noise of cattle lowing or poultry clucking, but since spring the flies are back and they keep on buzzing!

"I love that you've brought this to attention. An extensive database of uncommon but resistant and hardy plants/foods could be developed and organized by climate. Ease of growth and processing should also be taken in to account. I will try to…"

Fourth of July on the Lake

This past weekend was the annual celebration at the lake house in Connecticut. It is amazing that the lake is still so clear and beautiful after all these years. The watershed association has done a wonderful job protecting these waters from the damaging effects of development.The wood grill was finally ready to cook on, so we didn't miss the propane tank fueled grill anymore. The food actually tasted fresher than in the past and was easy to keep fueled.Dad was very proud of the solar hybrid…See More

Future

FutureToday is 2020/1/1. It is just like yesterday. The war is still continuing. It has started since 2010. In 2010, that year was a horrible year. Almost every energy ran out. Every country’s governments were crushed down at the same time. There were riots everywhere. All of the big company’s bosses were killed xdeadx in the riots. Troops fought each other everywhere. Food was bought up xawayx at once. There were no more food supplies in any shops. The economy was all crushed down. All the…See More

public servants

The exchange works directly for state and public workers and servants. It gives them credit in exchange for the amount of public work they contribute to the community. The more constructive they are based off a base rate the more credit they recieve.
