I've very lucky to live where I do. We haven't had scarcity or famine in years, but if we keep up at our current rate we will. The problem comes from the amount of meat we consume. Apparently, you could feed 100 times more people with the grain we feed a cow for one person to eat. That means the space we have alloted for each cow (and it's food) is about 100 times more than we need for the same amount of grain. Unfortunately, we don't have unlimited space and our population is growing. Globally it makes much more sense for us to cut down on the amount of meat we eat to enable those with less food more opportunity, especially if our population continues to grow at such a rate.
We also rely quite heavily on the use of factory farms here. Factory farms are not only cruel to animals, they also are a source of pollution and a drain on our clean water supply.
I can't find Canadian statistics so here are some from the US, showing there is also a problem with the amount of concentrated excrement on the ecosystem:
Production of excrement by total US
human population: 12,000 pounds/second
Production of excrement by US
livestock: 250,000 pounds/second
Water needed to produce 1 pound of
wheat: 25 gallons
Water needed to produce 1 pound of
meat: 2,500 gallons
I got these statistics from this website:
http://www.all-creatures.org/articles/env-theimpact.htmlI'm not a vegetarian, but I'm cutting down on the amount of meat I consume. I eat mostly white meat and tofurkey now. It's hard to cut out completely, so any tips or advice would be appreciated!
