I leave in the US, where feeding yourself is not the issue but what you feed yourself and how you feed. However in my home country of Nigeria Food security is an issue. In Nigeria it is how Food is been produced by farmers that is the cause of concern.
Let me make this clear Nigeria has enough agricultural resources to feed most countries in west Africa. In fact Nigeria has been helping to provide food items for other African nation. The problem with food production in Nigeria is inability to implement proper agricultural practice. The inabilty to implement sustainable Agricultural practice is the result of the Government abandonment of the Agricultural sector. Agriculture was once the driving force of the Nigerian economy before petroleum was discovered in the 60s. The Government abandon Agriculture and focus of the financial rewards of petroleum sectors.
What Nigerian Government failed to realize is the fact that vegetation and other resources that provides food for the mass are all forms of renewal energy resource, whereas crude oil or petroleum was NOT. As a matter of fact oil has contributed to global climate change which is affect the lives of people in developing countries.
Today, some areas of the Nigeria is faced with famine, food security, and climate change. Despite it's rich agricultural resources Nigeria still exports foreign food items.
I would propose the Nigerian Government or NGOs must immediately begin to revive the Agricultural sector by creating policies that promotes proper agricultural practice and urban farming. These policies must ensure that Farmers all over Nigeria (regardless of geographically region, ethnicity and religion) get the financial aid needed to cultivate and til their land. Nigerians should also demand that the Government provide more loans to help poor Farmers buy more land and properties for livestock farming, because most livestock are roaming around the street.. The government should to encourage Nigerian farms to exports their indigenous farm produce such as corn, maize and tomatoes to other countries (African or Asia). This will go a long way in solving the food crises in Africa and even in the rest of the world.
