Since I work for a organization that teaches wellness and healthy living practices to early primary students at Kentucky public schools, I knew that we had food issues in our state. I knew that "mountain dew mouth", extreme tooth decay in young children caused by mothers putting mountain dew soda in toddlers sippy cups because milk is too expensive and then not having access to proper dental care, is a huge problem in the eastern portion of the state.
I knew that many lower children living in urban, low income environments are not aware of what a carrot, an apple, a potato, etc actually look like because these foods are not available at the local supermarket or convience store that their groceries are purchased it. I knew that when parents were asked to name the fruit and vegetable that their child eats most often the two most common answers from kentucky parents were french fries and apple juice. So, I knew we were in a bad way.
What I did not know, was the amount of children primarily in the central and eastern portions of the state that we food insecure. Meaning that you are concerned about your ability to purchases sufficent amounts of food for your family at all times.
In 2009, in central and eastern ky alone 14, 500 families accessed the food pantry services of one chirstain organization alone, every week. Every week. This does not include the salvation army, federal programs, independent programs, free and reduced lunch programs, weekend backpack programs, etc.
This is appalling. I knew that kentucky had food issues, but this small amount of information that i have uncovered in the 20 free mins i had this afternoon to come on and Evoke, has made me want to make sure that our non profit faces the problems caused not only by too much food, but by not enough food, and not enough good healthy food as well.
