My neighbour is a 92 year old woman, and her children are all grown with families of their own. They try and make it over to her once every other week with groceries and I know that those are all the groceries she gets because she can’t drive herself to the store. Our backyards are only seperated by a small fence, and when I was younger she would always let me come in and pick berries from her fruit/vegetable gardens. For the past few years she hasn’t been able to use her gardens because gardening has become too much work for her. I helped plant new crops in her gardens and have been taking care of them for 2 months or so. We planted tomatoes, radishes, and carrotts.
As I said in my Food Security: LEARN blog, I volunteered at the Wesley Centre this year to help the underprivileged in my community. I served hot meals to the residents as well as partake in their meeting where I learned about all the poverty stricken areas in Hamilton. I also learned many statistics of who the poverty stricken people are. It isn’t fair that these people do not get healthy food every day. Healthy food should be a right, not a privilege. That is why I decided to volunteer at the Wesley Centre this upcoming summer. I start July 5th and I intend to help out at least once a week throughout the summer. It is the least I can do considering I get fed 3 full meals a day plus snacks, while these people are struggling to afford 1 meal for their families.
