i live in the west kootney region of british columbia canada. food supply in this area is largely dependent on shipping routes and methods. however, this area has the potential to be completely self sufficient in every way. we have tons of water here. we have the arrow lakes and kootney lake which both come together to form the head waters of the columbia river. very large fish of many different species are found in our waters. this area is very fertile and heavily vegetated with edible wild fruit. backyard gardens grow like crazy. nearly all types of canadian wildlife live here, from elk to wild turkeys. if something were to happen to our shipping routes, this area would probably be just fine in the short term.
to establish long-term self-sustainability here, there are a few challenges that would have to be overcome. for one, our outdoor growing season begins in may and ends in october. we would need to build heated greenhouses to be able to grow crops year round. another problem is that we don't have any major livestock growing operations, or any meat packing plants. however, i believe that these problems could be easily overcome should food security become a major issue for this area. our landscape here gives us one giant head start.
