This learning task really made me think about my assumptions. I live in the south of England - a relative bread-basket to the rest of the world. Or is it? OK, we have lots of farm land, farm animals, and natural resources. The weather is pretty conducive to growing food and maintaining relative food security. But I'm not sure that means that - should I have to - I would be able to grow enough for all my family's needs myself.
I don't have to - I can just nip to Tesco for what I need. But is that the way it should be?
My wife thinks I've gone a bit crazy. I've started spouting about growing potatoes in the back garden, along with tomatoes and other veg. Maybe next I'll start talking about getting chickens. We definitely don't have enough room for a cow.
So, do I have food security? No, in a nutshell. My security relies upon a rather fragile infrastructure. If that breaks down, I think I'll suffer - and badly. Not only because of the lack of room and resources, but also because of my lack of skills. I'm just not self-sufficient. And that's a bit scary...!
