Though I live in the capital of the United States, food security is still an issue for lower-income communities. DC does have its fair share for soup kitchens and food banks but there is a new problem brewing. In short, budget shortfalls in local school districts are forcing school to cut or reduce funding to items in their budget:
SCHOOL BUDGET SHORTFALLS = REDUCED/REMOVED "FREE SCHOOL LUNCHES" = THE LOSS OF SOME CHILDREN'S ONLY DAILY MEAL.
Parents and children have come to rely on what has always been provided to them. But now it is time to adapt.
Community groups have started educating communities and creating community gardens; teaching nutrition, work ethic, and paying for school lunches with money made from selling produce. It is not groundbreaking innovation, but it seems to be the best highlight on a sad situation in my local community.
