Urgent Evoke

A crash course in changing the world.

This is a subject that I held to the core of my heart and hence I thought of taking this issue up today. Food sovereignty depends on many factors. Firstly, soil health is very important for achieving food sovereignty. I had earlier a posted a blog on Methods to keep soil healthy which details many aspects and hence refrain to do so again. Also there should be proper surveillance for chemical degradation and strategies to rectify the same in the event of its occurrence. Cropping system/farming system planning is the next important aspect. Agroforestry which can be defined as an integrated and sustainable system of land use combining agriculture, forestry, horticulture, livestock management and agrostology, is one such system which can be adopted. However, we need to select the suitable species for agroforestry system based on local agro-climatic conditions. Adoption of multi-tier cropping system based on water availability has also shown promise. Thirdly, we have to adopt a contingency crop planning to counter aberrations of weather. Fourthly, water management is another aspect which needs to be taken into consideration. It include water resource development, rainwater harvesting in watersheds, multiple use of water, wastewater management and utilization, efficient water application such as through drip irrigation. Fifthly, financing agriculture is an important aspect which needs emphasis; microfinance is an option which may be tapped. Last but not the least, proper governance is the key to food security. Many of the African food problem is mainly due to poor governance.

Hello, Pradip. Excellent well linked post! +spark from me. Your post is a great base for people to refer to - I think food sovereignty is so important, but often get lost in it's multifaceted aspects - this post is extremely helpful.

OT- I'm out of the game now, but will check back on you to see how you are going - you are passionate about what you are doing here, and I back you all the way...take care! :o)

I'm with you though a huge challenge will be the transition from current practices to more sustainable options. With agroforestry, the time maturity becomes a real issue (I know people who have tried to make the transition without money and it got them in trouble). Even with dwarf fruit trees, you are looking at half a decade for meaningful production and standard varieties even longer. Pine nuts or oaks - plant them now for your grandchildren or great grandchildren.

As I said, I'm all for it, but we need to figure out the transition, because passion without planning impoverishes the visionary. Cheers.

Well, gestation period for fruit based system is a disadvantage. Hence, right now we are propagating the idea of fruit based multitier system. Kindly refer my following two posts regarding this:
http://www.urgentevoke.com/profiles/blogs/fruit-based-multitier-cro...
http://www.urgentevoke.com/profiles/blogs/multititier-cropping-system
The other combinations as filler crops will fetch return in initial years and once fruit comes to economic bearing, they will take care of finance.

Hi Pradip,

No worries - permaculture is a passion for me, but my wife and I have a bit of land and have looked at what is would cost to put it into say a conventional orchard and one would be conservatively looking at 3 to 5 thousand US per acre (half a hectare) with several years of maintenance before getting a return. Admittedly, you'd get a partial return on the lower herb and maybe shrub layers sooner and start up costs may be less outside the US, but it would still be a substantial investment with a lot of things that could go wrong. We will likely go agroforestry on our own bit of land, but we'd do it knowing that it is a luxury being able to wait before it comes into full production. People just need to know what their dreams cost.

Cheers,
Mark

Fourth of July on the Lake

This past weekend was the annual celebration at the lake house in Connecticut. It is amazing that the lake is still so clear and beautiful after all these years. The watershed association has done a wonderful job protecting these waters from the damaging effects of development. The wood grill was finally ready to cook on, so we didn't miss the propane tank fueled grill anymore. The food actually tasted fresher than in the past and was easy to keep fueled.Dad was very proud of the solar hybrid…See More

Stinging Nettle

In this blog post I will focus on a plant that is abundant in our nature, and which is immensely nutritious. It's of course the Stinging Nettle. Let's start with the chemical constituents of this plant:37 % Non-Nitrogen-Extracts19 - 29 % Ash9 - 21 % Fiber4 % Fat22 % ProteinOnce the leaves are drid, their protein content can reach an astounding 40 %, which is much higher than beef, which even under the best of circ**stances can never exceed 31 % protein. In addition the Stinging Nettle consists…See More

Future

FutureToday is 2020/1/1. It is just like yesterday. The war is still continuing. It has started since 2010. In 2010, that year was a horrible year. Almost every energy ran out. Every country’s governments were crushed down at the same time. There were riots everywhere. All of the big company’s bosses were killed xdeadx in the riots. Troops fought each other everywhere. Food was bought up xawayx at once. There were no more food supplies in any shops. The economy was all crushed down. All the…See More

public servants

The exchange works directly for state and public workers and servants. It gives them credit in exchange for the amount of public work they contribute to the community. The more constructive they are based off a base rate the more credit they recieve.
