Because of the climate change in the past years it was sometimes very dry in the summer month, so the problem of forest fires will rise in the future.
Here in Germany we have the so called "FireWatch" (
Link), it's a system with optical sensors which works with a smoke detection software so that a fire can be already detected in the development stage. It can detect smoke from a distance of nearly 15 km.
So this system is very important in the prevention of forest fires, but there can be, for example, technical problems or other problems so that a fire was not dedected that early so that is has already grown. And there comes Ushahidi. It can give the firefighters or the inhabitants some very important informations and facts.
I would track the following data:
- actual fire in affected areas
- evacuations if a fire is near a city or village
- weather forecasts (will there be any rain in the next days?)
- informations about missing persons or cattle
- the positions of units of fireworkers
Here is a actual picture of the forest fire risks in Germany:
