A crash course in changing the world.
In 2,093 I'll be 100 years old and looking back on my time in Gainesville. While working as a reporter for WUFT News, I wrote an article about the Newnans Lake Cypress Preserve (http://www.wuft.org/news/2013/10/07/newnans-cypress-lake-preserve-f...) and explored the diverse ecosystem there. Kevin Ratkus, environmental specialist with the county’s Environmental Protection Department, told me how the preserve was built on ancient native american burial lands and had been looted for arrowheads in the past. Because of the looting, the Environmental Protection Department hired an onsite caretaker to thwart off looters. I'd like to share this cross-generational knowledge as my piece of indigenous history.
