Game1 Resourcefullness
At the local science fair, I saw one kid have a project that demonstrated resourcefulness AND addressed what I see as two problems in the region. He 'Macgyvered together a vertical wind turbine from plastic bins that was tied to an electric generator.
It wasn't so much HIS display of resourcefulness as his understanding of the dual problems and opportunities in rural Alaska. Stuff that's brought in here doesn't leave. Broken snow machines, cars, anything and everything in that in the lower 48 is hauled off to a dump out of sight and out of mind... sits here in backyards and side yards.
It takes a while to recognize that it isn't a cultural inability to 'see' the clutter as ugly (which the new lower 48 eyes sees first)... but the reality of what we cast off (since it's less likely to be carted out of sight) mixed with the reality that a lot of folks up here are Macgyver's. A co-worker's family recently fixed their own truck from the spare parts of the junk truck at their house. OK - a lot of folks can do that ( not me ) ... And sometimes the pack-rat, 'you never know when you might need that' mentality gets a little out of hand. Especially since it seems like spare parts are so RARELY re-used and junk doesn't appear to get 'digested'.
So what I liked about his project - was the vision to see that we can do more than use the parts for the same or similar uses we originally acquired them - but to use resourcefulness to create new and useful things from the stuff lying around. Maybe this seems silly to those of you from rural places or other parts of the world where the dump is the 'store' more than an eyesore - but it reminded this middle class American, that garbage has to go somewhere, and if we can turn it into something useful we should. I have a little electric heater, and I haven't stuck it in the garbage. Because something tells me, anyone of my neighbors can just crack that puppy apart and fix the short and have a working heater. Now I just need to find out WHO.

The meal
It is 7'oclock, I was late home from work due to an assignment that i wanted to get ahead on. By the time I get home I am feeling extremley tired and I cannot be bothered to make a proper meal.
