GAME1: the power of Sustainable Development thinking

I couldn't choose any other term than SUSTAINABILITY, for my power evocation.
If you still don't know what a power evocation is, take a look at this.

First of all, I would point out for a while the reason why I actually prefer speaking of "sustainable development", instead of just "sustainability". These expressions are often considered as synonims,
but have slightly different meanings.
While "sustainability is a quite generic term (originating in the field of economics), which
deals with the availability of a certain resource and is usually refferred to environmental issues, "sustainable development" is a wider concept which includes consideration on the mankind as a wh***, its attitudes, its potential.

The concept was presented for the first time in 1987 by Gro Harlem Brundtland, who was Norwegian Prime Minister at that time, during the United Nations World Commission on Environment and Development. As it appears on the Brundtland Report (aka "Our Common Future") it is sustainable that "development which meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs". As we read on Wikipedia, sustainable development incorporates many concepts of deep ecology, and it does not focus solely on environmental issues.
That says it all: it regards present and future generation (together with the past ones, from which wecan learn a lot); it doesn't make any distinction among races, beliefs or cla****; it deals with the humankind and the environment, as interrelated parts of single, beautifully complex system.

It's almost eight years I'm researching on sustainable development, both for my future profession and for personal interest, and I'm totally fascinated by the many implications such a topic bear in itself, when understanding it deeply.
Actually, the more I research, read and discover in this field, the less I can tell where's the threshold between what I just consider a professional opportunity and what belongs to the wider and deeper system of my personal values.
This is why I consider Sustainable Development as an incredibly powerful trigger for any other EVOKE Power: it joins the need for survival with the will of being part of a global, constructive and creative process which can make this world better for every creature in the planet.

I could give many examples but, in order to be strict with the GAME1 rules, I'll report just one of those, by now. It is called "ZERI" (Zero Emissions Research & Initiatives) and it is a global network of creative minds, seeking solutions to world challenges, founded by Gunter Pauli.
Here you can find the network's website:
www.zeri.org

As we read on their site:
Thanks to the thousands of people who took the time over the past decade to meet, discuss, disagree and dialogue the concept of zero emissions; thanks to the ecosystems on five continents which shared their desire for live and their capacity to thrive even in the harshest conditions with little or nothing; we have now reached the moment to distill the next ten years from all these experiences. This reflection is not to be the privilege of the one who started this, but rather has to be the responsibility of all those who share the desire to pursue this venture. It all started over a decade ago with an string of ideas: (1) we wish to respond to all the basic needs of all living species on Earth with what we have; (2) we wish to find creative solutions to the pressing problems of our time; (3) the way forward was first and foremost to convert waste into nutrients and energy for another. “Nature does not know the concept of waste; the only species capable of making something no one desires is the human species”. This became guiding and starting principle of the ZERI program. The research and the initiatives that emanated from that vision were to be built on this design principle of nature.

The projects encouraged, started and sustained by this network are amazing: breweries converting the waste protein and fiber from production processes into valuable products; a self-sustaining community in Colombia that regenerates biodiversity, produces drinking water and sustainably-farmed biodiesel, while reducing national foreign debt; places for designing sustainable farmhouses and for teaching students how to secure food and energy.

The network gave a demontration of how SUSTAINABILITY can stimulate COLLABORATION among people and industries, CREATIVITY, ENTREPRENEURSHIP, LOCAL INSIGHT, kNOWLEDGE SHARE, RESOURCEFULNESS, SPARK and, maybe above all, VISION.
I hope you'll find this interesting and suggest you to spend some time taking a look at what they've done.

Fantastic. Such a wealth of knowledge there, and I'm really impressed that you've been researching this stuff for years already. I'm particularly impressed how your example is based on sustainable development, but incorporates all the other powers too. If I could give you more points, I would.

Thanks for playing and passing along this game. Great examples of people making the best use of land and resources they know. Sometime I interchange the term self-reliance for sustainability. It i feel the term can appeal to a larger crowd than sustainability. Along the lines of Energy-independence. But thats for another discussion.

again, when searching for posts tagged sustainability found yours :)

I think the term "sustainable development" is often misused.
It was originally invented by economists, because environmentalist criticized economical growth theory as being absurd - in the world of limited resources the unlimited growth is impossible. So sustainable development unfortunately was and still is in a way just a more politically correct term for making profit.

Too many corporations and politicians sustainable development mostly interpret in a way of efficiency rather than sufficiency. And so after more than twenty years of using this terminology, our needs are as big, as we had four not just one Earth.

I agree with you for the meaning, not exactly for the words.

As far as I know, it is the term "sustainability" which was created by economists; at first, it was meant to describe the mere availability of material resources, in order to forsee which use should be done, to maximize gains from them.
That is what I was trying to say thruough this post: I do believe that the concept of "development" is really the key, to interpret the difference: it is systemic, environmentally conscious, human centered, and it involves future generations.
Gro Harlem Brundtland was a politician but, from what I read, I think she was really involved in those topics, definitely not pursuing economical interests.

On the other hand, it is sadly true what you say about how the term is misused. Everybody fill their mouth with this expression without having any idea, about how such a theme is complex.

Politicians ban a few toxic material without planning alternatives, and they call it sustainable development.
Designers make sofas with little grassfields over it, and thei call it sustainable development
Factories change their light bulbs with low-consumption ones, and they call it...
... well, you got the idea

green-washing is the other very useful term ...
Comment by MoE on March 19, 2010 at 10:13am
yes, or green-painting; it definitely conveys the idea of working on the appearance, just by coverying what's dirty beneath...
Again, I'm so glad finding somebody with whom I feel I share so much.

Ah, also I'm still thinking on the JEWEL thing; I'm silent but mumbling on it. I'll let you know soon, promised ;)

I know you do:) and by the way good wiki upgrade (I'll contribute if I find something interesting)
as I said we have time ...
I have a plan to catch some new JEWELS during the rainy weekend ...

Fourth of July on the Lake

This past weekend was the annual celebration at the lake house in Connecticut. It is amazing that the lake is still so clear and beautiful after all these years. The watershed association has done a wonderful job protecting these waters from the damaging effects of development. The wood grill was finally ready to cook on, so we didn't miss the propane tank fueled grill anymore. The food actually tasted fresher than in the past and was easy to keep fueled.Dad was very proud of the solar hybrid…See More

Future

FutureToday is 2020/1/1. It is just like yesterday. The war is still continuing. It has started since 2010. In 2010, that year was a horrible year. Almost every energy ran out. Every country’s governments were crushed down at the same time. There were riots everywhere. All of the big company’s bosses were killed xdeadx in the riots. Troops fought each other everywhere. Food was bought up xawayx at once. There were no more food supplies in any shops. The economy was all crushed down. All the…See More

public servants

The exchange works directly for state and public workers and servants. It gives them credit in exchange for the amount of public work they contribute to the community. The more constructive they are based off a base rate the more credit they recieve.
