I was aware that Bill Gates (just like many billionaires) is into philanthropy but i wasnt aware of the scale. Around the same time i caught a glimpse on an article about EVOKE i also caught this article on cnntech.
It was a kind of pleasant surprise. Most of us know Bill Gates to be the big man behind Microsoft, we've all seen the tons of jokes and content about the two on the Internet. So i was surprised to read in that article that not only has he made billions in software development (being one of the key people in the last decades to bring the information age to what it is today) but he also has adopted the right attitude in what to do with all these money. Someone in that TED conference said money brings more happiness up until about the $60.000/year mark. After that it doesn't make much a big difference and Bill Gates is way past that mark. So he's pushing money in the right direction and also being actively involved in the foundation's work and agenda.
His talk at the TED conference shows that he is not only putting the hand in the pocket but he is also aware of the current situation and has good knowledge of what actions need to be made and in what direction. Key point of the speech was the importance of clean and cheap energy for the world and especially the developing countries and emphasized certain technologies where we are far behind and research should focus on during the next decade.
On closing he said: "You'd be stunned at the ridiculously low costs of innovation"
Cheers
