A crash course in changing the world.
The news story that I chose to focus on covers a report about worldwide gender inequality in the workplace (http://bit.ly/bzixm6). The statistics from this report clearly show that some progress is still being made in this area. However, there is still a long way to go in achieving gender equality in the workplace, and in some regions of the world very little progress is being made. For example, the article states that "In some regions, there are still less than 4 economically active women per 10 active men." Women also still have a harder time finding work and when they do find work they often receive less pay and benefits than male workers.
The results of this report are not surprising. Though some parts of the world have greater gender inequality than others there is no region, country, or locality that is immune from this problem. In doing some research for this mission I learned about a women's organization here in my hometown of Buffalo, NY. The organization is called New York State Women, Inc. and there is a Buffalo Niagara chapter (http://bit.ly/ac304m). Their website states that "Since our Charter in 1934, we have promoted full participation, equality and economic self-sufficiency for all working women." The website also lists some of the things that they are currently working on, which include the following issues:
• Equal and fair pay issues
• Flexible hours and parental leave
• Policies for improved child care and elder care
• Social Security Reform
As the husband of a working woman and the father of two girls it is good to know that this organization is working hard to ensure the fair treatment of women in the labour market. I hope that by the time my girls are ready to start their careers (if that is the path they choose to take) there will no longer be a need for such an organization.
