A crash course in changing the world.
In this week, I chose a story where girls are supported to acquire skills in information and communication technologies (ICTs). Therefore, the United Nations telecommunications agency will start the first “Girls in ICT Day”. It will be observed on each fourth Thursday of April.
According to forecasts of the International Telecommunication Union, there will be a shortage of skilled ICT professionals. Supporting girls and young women could counteract this projected shortage. Aim is to encourage the gender mainstreaming and the empowerment of women through the use of ITCs.
In Germany we have a similar campaign. It is called “Girls Day”. Like in the example above, Girls and women shall be motivated to take up a profession in science or engineering. Particularly technical companies, universities and research centers open their doors to give girls from 5th grade an insight. And it seems to be successful: Girls Day participants form a positive opinion about technical occupations and the number of freshman in engineering study paths raise. Furthermore, companies show enhanced commitment in approaching young women in technical occupation. On April 14, the 11th Girls Day took place in Germany.
