A crash course in changing the world.
It’s 2020- ten years since I donated $30 to the Self-Help fund in Ghana when I was there doing a research project during my undergraduate
degree. Now I’ve come back with my family for a vacation- and the strangest
thing happened!
I was in K**asi, buying some top-up credit for my mobile phone, when my daughter asked me if we could get some lunch. We walked to
“God’s Grace Fast Food” restaurant and I bought her some chicken with jollof
rice- her favourite. The woman who sold it to me said she thought she
recognized me. I told her I hadn’t been in K**asi for 10 years, so she was
probably mistaken. But as we chatted a bit more and my daughter finished up her
meal, we came to the realization that we had, in fact, met ten years earlier!
She was working at the guesthouse that I was staying in with my friends. She was employed part-time there as the primary cook. I told her
that I always loved the s***o sauce she made and I never found another place
that made it just like her. She laughed, and told me that she was only working
there a couple of months more after I’d left. Apparently she had been given the
opportunity to take a micro-credit loan from an organization called Self-Help
and now she owned and operated this very locally-popular restaurant.
I was awe-struck! I didn’t know what to tell her. She asked me what was wrong, and I told her about the donation I’d made back then-
something small, I thought at the time, never expecting to actually MEET the
person who had benefitted from what I’d done. She laughed again, and then I did
too. I was overjoyed that my donation had made a difference in her life. She
seemed to be incredibly happy now and very prosperous in her life since then.
The funny thing is, though, that I could have given that money directly to her. I could have given her the $30 up front- instead of
anonymously online as a loan. I’m glad she got the money either way, but I
still felt bad for not giving a helping hand to someone, when it wouldn’t have
been very hard for me to do so. We never know how we will impact someone else’s
life, do we? We never know the mark we will leave on them- or them on us. And
it just goes to show you that some change,
as small as it is, can make all the difference in the world for someone.
