When reading up on the ACT mission for this week I wondered for a while as to how I would go about it only to realise that someone in need of a little quidance was right in front of me. My house mates and I employ a domestic worker (Sylvia) who gets by quite well but seeing as she has to support 6 children a little extra food will never go wasted. I spoke to my house mates and to Sylvi who all thought it would be a great idea if we had an afternoon to which we dedicated the planting of a veggie garden. The idea was that we would research proper techniques and then plant a garden at our house while teaching Sylvi the techniques we have learnt. It turned out to be an awesome afternoon in which we all got stuck in but I was amazed at how much seemingly general knowledge I take for granted. I assumed that things like making sure a plant recieves sunlight and the importance of nutrient rich soil were things that were simply known but when we mentioned this to Sylivi it was news to her! I felt that it just stood testament to the extent to which the sharing of just the most basic of agricultural knowledge can make a difference. What was also nice is that Syli's 5 year old son Atendose got stuck in too and we gave Sylvi som cold season bulbs and seedluing to plant in her own garden which we are going to get started on this week.
