What I read about Mahila Milan reminded me very much of one part of the social work I´ll be doing for one year in La Paz. I´ll be working with shoeblacks helping them in every way I can. One of the biggest parts of the project is about saving money.
Those people are too poor to open a bank account on their own, no bank would let them. Often they don´t even have passports so that it is absolutely impossible to save money in a bank.
Instead they can give the money they want to save to me and I´ll put everything on a central account.
That way they can put something aside for investments etc.
There´s also the possibility of getting a micro loan from the organization I´m working with. It will also be partly my job to consider if someone really needs a loan and if the loan will pay of.
That way very poor people in La Paz get the chance to start a new business or do something else with their saved money.
