I chose Dave Eggers & his organization
826National - since I first heard about what he does with these writing workshops, I've immediately been enamored by the concept. Mentoring students in expository and creative writing is something I love to do - and something I believe in strongly. Everyone has a story. And everyone deserves the chance to realize the power of their story on other people. It's one of the most magical things I've ever experienced: young people being changed through story and through their willingness to take risks in writing.
This organization essentially sparked my idea of
The Art of Storytelling Center - where inner city kids (or any teenagers, really) had the opportunity to come and receive mentorship in dance, photography, videography, writing or any other medium in which they could tell a story. How cool would that be? I see it happening - and I'm anxious to pick the brain of Eggers and his cohorts at 826National to see how to go about creating an environment of openness and authenticity in art.
To keep in contact with the two entities, I joined the fan page for both
Dave Eggers and
826National, and I am now following 826National on
twitter. Eventually, I hope to send an e-mail to one/both of them - we'll see if I get a response.
