A crash course in changing the world.
My search for a hero has taken my across the globe. From Wangari Maathai and Dr. James Mwangi, to President Paul Kagame, to Prof. Mohammad Yunus, to Paul Meyer ... and the list goes on!
I finaly settled for Cliff Schmidt of Ghana via the USA. I first heard Cliff Schmidt speak to a Googlers regarding his innocation the "Talking Book". The Talking Book is a simple, durable and portable audio computer. Sounds simple enough ... so why do I feel this social innovator desearves HERO status?
Well, according to UNESCO, some 774 million adults lack minimum literacy skills. 1 in 5 adults is still not literate and 2 out of 3 of them are women. 72.1 million children are out of school and many more attend irregularly or drop out. Inadequate options for literacy learning, leaves impoverished communities with the least access to information that can improve their health, economic opportunity, and ability to defend their human rights. This kind of information can often be found within the country or even the region where it is needed. The difficulty comes in efficiently delivering information to millions of people throughout vast rural areas.
Enter the Talking Book. With this device users can:
The device accepts power from standard, locally available batteries, but also accepts new batteries that can be recharged with solar power. All for the grand sum of US$10!
Schmidt used technology found in toys to keep the costs down. Schmidt's blog features amazing stories from actual users.
I believe in the potential of the Talking Book and I am now raising funds for them. You can too by simply voting for them here.
I have written to Cliff Schmidt and will keep with his work. In the meantime, happy reading to all literate Agents.
