A crash course in changing the world.

The holiday would be christmas. Here in Canada it means snow and cold. A lot of both. Oh and the sun sets down pretty early. So I will need heat and light.

I am going on a limb here and hope that in 10 year's time (my son will be 12) I will have a small house in the forest not too close to the neighbors. I will also give all my efforts to make it self-efficient in terms of energy, maybe solar power on the roof (if the trees permit) or wind power, again above the trees. I would also make sure the house is Energy Star, i.e. best energy saving materials to build the house from the windows to the isolation, etc.

I will have at that point a fireplace (that's very important) and I should think of checking how they managed to heat the entire house in old times where fireplaces were the only way to keep warm. Maybe bring the pipes everywhere or multiple fireplaces? My house wouldn't be a big house at all ; I don't need that much space and it could be a relatively open design, so there wouldn't be too many cold small rooms on their own. The solar power (or other) would only provided for extra heating if the fireplace isn't enough (which will most certainly be the case), a bit of light and small appliances to work (we do need of meal for the holiday). For the lighting, yes it is christmas but I feel I could change my traditions and instead of having christmas lights everywhere I could go for candles. After all, I like candles very much. I guess I could even make my own candles, that would be a fun project and I would use them just for this occasion.

The holiday itself would be celebrated with my close family, we would go out and play in the snow a bit and come back to a warm chocolate afterward ; have a good meal together and getting in front of the fire. My father would take out his guitar and we would sing songs and play games. Hm, best holiday ever. I should do that next year, actually, not wait for 10 years from now.

H out.

Insulation could be a big help here. Make the most of your home by making sure that you're keeping all of the heat you generate! You can go above, WAY above, standard commercial insulation.

Absolutely! We have a program here where the government funds parts of anything relating to energy saving, top of my head, windows are in on the deal but materials too and even washing machine. Do you have that in the US too?

why not self sufficient in terms of food too ! a smallholding with chickens and one or two livestock - I bet your son would love to look after a few animals and dig up some soil to watch plants grow!

Ah, Adam, you read my real dream! I would love to have a couple of chickens! I already do a bit of gardening so last year we actually had a small crop, it was nice :) But chickens would be the top of the dream for me.

Quails are good too ! - need less room & upkeep, but still produce eggs etc.

Really?? I didn't think of that at all... But can't quails fly away? Don't they have migratory patterns for example?

Mhh... chicken. Would you be able to eat them if you keep them :). In Kenya thats par for the course but my brother went to school in Florida and his neighbour had a pet goat. Every time my brother looked over the fence all he thought about was bbq goat Kenyan style. +1 Sustanaility to you.

goats are great animals, and their milk, if you use renit, makes great cheese. And they're really clever!

However, a goat owner should never have a lawn he wishes to keep beautiful ;)

Thanks Shakwei :) I know that a chicken who is very stress and lay eggs daily will not be very palatable. The meat will be really hard. But that's from experience when I was a teenager, I had a friend that lived on a chicken farm of 3000+ heads of chickens. Just for eggs. The situation was borderline cruel, althought these chickens didn't have their beaks burned. But they were in cages. Very, very thight cages.

If you do it right, the animals/fowl won't be stressed. You don't need 3000, or tight cages. Lots of ways to do self sufficient fatrming and keep it small :)

Fourth of July on the Lake

This past weekend was the annual celebration at the lake house in Connecticut. It is amazing that the lake is still so clear and beautiful after all these years. The watershed association has done a wonderful job protecting these waters from the damaging effects of development. The wood grill was finally ready to cook on, so we didn't miss the propane tank fueled grill anymore. The food actually tasted fresher than in the past and was easy to keep fueled.Dad was very proud of the solar hybrid…See More

Stinging Nettle

In this blog post I will focus on a plant that is abundant in our nature, and which is immensely nutritious. It's of course the Stinging Nettle. Let's start with the chemical constituents of this plant:37 % Non-Nitrogen-Extracts19 - 29 % Ash9 - 21 % Fiber4 % Fat22 % ProteinOnce the leaves are drid, their protein content can reach an astounding 40 %, which is much higher than beef, which even under the best of circ**stances can never exceed 31 % protein. In addition the Stinging Nettle consists…See More

All of the out of date foodstuffs have been automaticaly thrown away by the fridge, they will be recycled tomorrow as animal feed or something. I see i have organic local eggs and some local cheese. Future

FutureToday is 2020/1/1. It is just like yesterday. The war is still continuing. It has started since 2010. In 2010, that year was a horrible year. Almost every energy ran out. Every country’s governments were crushed down at the same time. There were riots everywhere. All of the big company’s bosses were killed xdeadx in the riots. Troops fought each other everywhere. Food was bought up xawayx at once. There were no more food supplies in any shops. The economy was all crushed down. All the…See More

public servants

The exchange works directly for state and public workers and servants. It gives them credit in exchange for the amount of public work they contribute to the community. The more constructive they are based off a base rate the more credit they recieve.
