In 2020, I've turned my back on New York and returned to the South where I grew up. I'm self-employed, and have the ability to work from home, so I'm able to devote the time needed to growing much of my own food. The climate in Florida means that I have almost a year-round growing season, which is a huge benefit. My husband and I have a small flock of chickens that live in the back yard and while we're both vegetarians, we do use their eggs on a regular basis. Florida's average temps have risen by a degree or two and water has become an increasingly scarce commodity, so we do what we can to have smart irrigation techniques and recycle our wastewater.
For dinner tonight, we're having a pretty traditional Southern dinner - cornbread, black-eyed peas and collard greens... Largely made from produce grown in our backyard.
