Although the poverty line is drawn at @22K on LI, the same as it is everywhere in the US, the cost of living is higher here than in most communities (a family of four lives comfortably here on $90K per year). This summit, held at Adelphi University in 2010, called attention to the problem, bringing together leaders from the communities of LI to think of solutions. Over 100,000 children go to bed hungry in one of the most affluent regions of the US.
"An estimated 285,000 Long Islanders, including nearly 110,000 children, face the risk of going hungry every day, according to a recent study by Feeding America, a national hunger relief organization. Nearly half of Nassau and Suffolk residents receiving food assistance are forced to choose between paying for food and paying for necessities like health care. Often, the food they receive from their local pantry or other resources makes the difference in getting through the month. And according to Hunger in America 2010: The Local Report for Long Island, each week, nearly 65,000 Long Islanders are accessing the food pantries, soup kitchens and other emergency feeding programs on Long Island."
Non-profit organizations are working to make sure that people who deserve benefits such as food stamps are able to get them. One way was by implementing online application for food stamps--a very good idea in my opinion.
Of course, the recession has made these problems much worse for groups that were not affected previously.
"Over the next several years, the Center will focus on Food, Nutrition and Health, with special attention to identifying community food and nutrition understandings and needs as well as environmental and social contributors to the issues of food security, dietary choice, and health outcomes."
