Urgent Evoke

A crash course in changing the world.

I read some of the articles and decided to choose one about American girls that raised awareness and money to fight child marriage in Ethiopia, Liberia, Malawi, and Guatemala.
The campaign behind this article is called Girl Up.

In the linked audio file Gina Reiss-Wilchins, Director of the Girl Up campaign explains the different reasons why parents in poor countries tend to get their little girls married to much older men.

One main reason seems to be poverty. All the families don't have that much money and it is expected, that a woman stays at home being a good wife. So if parents get their girls married to a men they don't have to pay for her anymore and don't have to buy food for her. It sounds ridiculous, but it's true.

Besides that the parents get something like a bride price for their girl, like if they "sell" her. In most of the times this is a cattle and as a cattle is very valuable this is also a way against poverty and for food.
Overall it's all about raising their own living standard for the price of their daughter.

The story remembers me of a book that I read some years ago. It is called "I Am Nujood, Age 10 and Divorced" and tells a story about a young girl in the Republic of Yemen that gets married to a man that is 3 times older than she is, about the cruel things he does to her and about her escape and her fight against the marriage and for her rights.

For someone living in Germany where things like that are unthinkable it's really hard to imagine that there is a place in the world where this happens - today.

I wanted to see what happened to the girl from the book and searched for some information. Sadly to say I found out that the still lives in poverty. While she received wide support and many awards internationally, she didn't get money from the book selling and the french journalist that discovered her broke tie. Also she couldn't leave her country to travel to Vienna to receive another award because the authorities took her passport.

This is not what I expected to happen. The only thing that got better since the publishing of her book is that the government of the Rupublic of Yemen changed the age for marriage to at least 17 in succession to the international pressure.
This is a really sad ending for Nujood. When I read the book I was sure things would get better for her, but today it seems like mostly everything stayed the same or even got worse.

It shows that there is so much left to do to fight for the rights of women in third world countries and it's not about emancipation, it's just about a normal way of living...

Fourth of July on the Lake

This past weekend was the annual celebration at the lake house in Connecticut. It is amazing that the lake is still so clear and beautiful after all these years. The watershed association has done a wonderful job protecting these waters from the damaging effects of development. The wood grill was finally ready to cook on, so we didn't miss the propane tank fueled grill anymore. The food actually tasted fresher than in the past and was easy to keep fueled.Dad was very proud of the solar hybrid…See More

Future

FutureToday is 2020/1/1. It is just like yesterday. The war is still continuing. It has started since 2010. In 2010, that year was a horrible year. Almost every energy ran out. Every country’s governments were crushed down at the same time. There were riots everywhere. All of the big company’s bosses were killed xdeadx in the riots. Troops fought each other everywhere. Food was bought up xawayx at once. There were no more food supplies in any shops. The economy was all crushed down. All the…See More

public servants

The exchange works directly for state and public workers and servants. It gives them credit in exchange for the amount of public work they contribute to the community. The more constructive they are based off a base rate the more credit they recieve.
