Orignila message reads:

... and discovered that I CANNOT submit an Evokation.

http://www.urgentevoke.com/page/rules-for-playing-evoke

3.1. Conference Fellowship – Young Innovators
3.1.3. ELIGIBILITY: Player must have been born on January 1, 1980 or later.

3.2. Mentorships
3.2.3.3. All players must have been born on January 1, 1975 or later

In order to find this page, I had to click on a link in the "Happy Evokation Day" post that is tucked away on the front page. I only looked for it because I received an email with the fabulously informative content:
Urgent Evoke
A crash course in changing the world.
A message to all members of Urgent Evoke

Due to the formatting of the page, the rest of the message is hidden.

When I started this project, I was initially put off by the fact that it wasn't clear what I was expected to do, and I subsequently wrote an article about this fact. In my Evoke 1.5 discussion, I also asked about the Terms and Conditions - something I had actually read.

Clicking the About button at the top of the page takes you to a blog which doesn't list these rules, but does have the following messsage at the side. I've highlighted the bit that is misleading:

EVOKE is free to play and open to anyone, anywhere.

The game begins on March 3, 2010. Players can join the game at any time.

Players who successfully complete ten game challenges in ten weeks will be able to claim their honors: Certified World Bank Institute Social
Innovator – Class of 2010.

Top players will also earn online mentorships with experienced social innovators and business leaders from around the world, and scholarships
to share their vision for the future at the EVOKE Summit in Washington
DC.

EVOKE was developed by the World Bank Institute, the learning and knowledge arm of the World Bank Group, and directed by alternate reality
game master Jane McGonigal.

Nowehere visible does it say that there are age restrictions. I have made a serious effort to find out what the rules are, but nobody bothered to put them in a place where I could find them. I have tried to be proactive about addressing this issue, but nobody seems to care. I really want to protest the way in which the managers of this site have failed to communicate clearly. It's just not good enough.

EDIT: Jane kindly replied to this very quickly, with a clarification.

At any rate, if you sincerely want mentorship, my advice is to submit your evokation and say exactly which mentor(s) you want to work with and why, and we will ensure that they at least see it.

I just clicked on the link at the bottom of the page for the Terms of Service and section 15 is labled "15. Ning Platform Policies" and says nothing about ages. Of course, what you probably meant was the "Terms of Use and Privacy Policy" not the Terms of Service (TOS). In the "Terms of Use and Privacy Policy" there is another link in section 15 which goes to the official rules (which are subject to change at any time, apparently), which at some point does mention the age restrictions.

My question is, why not just be honest and upfront about these age restrictions and the rules? Why hide them so deep that even someone who's looking for them has a hard time finding them? What was the thinking behind that choice?

Sarah, I'm designing Evoke 1.5 to promote teamwork. A big part of the problem with the current version is that it's built on Ning, which doesn't have the facilities necessary but has the advantage of being cheap.

Stepping back and looking at this wh*** program, my feeling is that it was thrown together with limited resources and lacks clarity in what it's core mission is. It was launched without being tested first. The 'blame' for that can probably be pointed at the WBI, but everyone is keen to point out that the World Bank is not a progressive organisation. So what did we expect?

Another way to look at this is that we are the guinea pigs, guinea pigs who have the opportunity to innovate and make change in the experiment. Someone has to test new initiatives, and we're the lucky ones this time.

Evoke 1.5 is designed to solve the technical problems, which is the appropriate response after all. We're all here to sove problems. Why not start with fixing our own process? Blue hat thinking, for those familiar with the concept.

What's the solution to this problem? I think it's three-fold:
1. Evoke should email everyone - in plain text - clarifying the rules for this round. If I was in charge, I would also publicly adopt a policy of flexibility with regards to the mentors.
2. Everybody submit their Evokation as planned, and go ahead on the assumption that the Evoke team are fair and reasonable people who will respond to the community they have created. Oh, and tell anyone you know who is a reporter.
3. For next season, Evoke should create an 'about' page that tells people what to do and gives a "short version of the rules" in plain English, as well as links to the one-page long (legalese) version.

Here is the description from the TED Fellows page: We are targeting applicants of ages 21-40 from five target regions: Africa, Asia/Pacific, the Caribbean, Latin America, the Middle East. However, anyone over the age 18 from around the world is welcome to apply.

That seems to me to be a clear statement of intent, the sort of thing we should aim for.

And here is one of my friends' approach to code of behaviour on his community website:
Forum Rules

Forumosa’s Rules – The Short Version

* This is a message board for people interested in expat life in Taiwan.
* Treat people with respect. Don’t be rude or bigoted. Discuss the message, not the messenger.
* Familiarize yourself with the site before you start posting.
* Respect the wishes of the moderators and administrators.

Forumosa’s Rules – The Long Version

Follow the “Short Version” of the rules listed above and you will never have any trouble on Forumosa. Those simple rules are the road map for productive participation on Forumosa.

We also provide this “Long Version” of the rules, dealing with a number of specific issues that arise on this message board. This “Long Version” does not supersede the “Short Version” of the rules. Rather, it is intended to provide specific information about specific situations.....

No offense, but why is everyone so cynical? It seems obvious to me that Evoke has GOOD intentions with their aim at young people. They are not trying to exclude anyone, just trying to motivate a very difficult audience to motivate. Once people are over a certain age, it becomes easier to get these messages through because they are usually already taking an interest in the world around them.

Please don't take this the wrong way, but if you got ANYTHING out of this experience, then it seems like you should be happy no? Why are so many people looking for what they didn't get, rather than what they did?

And for what it's worth, I won some funding from the Ministry of Education in Taiwan last year. The deadline for applications was the end of May, similar to this one. After several changes in the rules and the process, I have reached a point where I have a project 90% finished but am unable to proceed because I'm still waiting for the money!

I received an email today telling me that the MoE have finally released the payment, and now it has gone to a business incubator who require me to fill in yet more paperwork - identical to paperwork I have already submitted - and "hope" to transfer $s to me "within a month."

Meanwhile, I have contributors waiting to be paid and software that needs to be written. The plan I submitted a year ago was for everything to be finished by December - based on the published payment schedule.

Compared to that nightmare, the problems at Evoke are inconsequential. I reared up because I'm on a short fuse at the moment, and also because unclear communication leads to people making plans that they are subsequently unable to follow. If you indicate that A is available then people plan for A, and when you tell them they have to settle for B you inevitably cause disruption and distress.

Clarity of communication is vital. Processes should be properly designed and effectively communicated. Failure to do so results in unhappy people pointing fingers.

Nicholas, I think we're being the opposite of cynical, we've been optimistic, and just now discovered that we weren't being told the basic truth upfront, and we're expressing our confusion, frustration, and asking for answers, and suggesting better options for the future, which is, I hope exactly what you and everyone wants - positive forward movement.

Had we been cynical, we never would have played the game, and we certainly wouldn't be here offering suggestions or asking questions. :-)

Turil, I am ill equipped to challenge you in word games ;)

Nicholas, maybe you could consider this as similar to the situation where you were interested in someone romantically, and they asked you out on a date. You were thrilled, and started thinking seriously about them after dating them for a couple of months. And then, suddenly, you discovered that they were married.

Would you be happy? Because clearly you got something out of the experience? Or would you, perhaps, being really, really, stunningly aware of what you weren't going to get, and how you probably would have made very different choices if you'd actually known the truth from the start?

Nicolas, I am very happy with all there I learned in this weeks, and it was a great experience .... but was extremely rude not put clear rules since the beginning.. That is all I am saying .... The intentions, all of us understand, are good, but they made a mistake dont get all clear at the very beginning. I hope for the next year they get clear for the good all of the new agents.
Comment by Nicholas Nagao on May 13, 2010 at 1:12pm
Turil, that's a funny comparison because I've had that sort of thing happen a few times in my life. And while I'm upset, I really do try to think about the positives I gained from that interaction. Keep in mind I'm not married yet so perhaps it's self-preservation not to get upset about every woman it doesn't work out with...or maybe it's just me.

Anyways, in general I believe this perspective on life helps you be "happy". It's something I learned from reading the teachings of the Dalai Lama and it has helped me lead a MUCH happier life.

Hello, I am here again I did not read the rules either. I just thought: "If I am going to be competing against kids few years older than 13, Evoke will just not pick MY evokation, because it would not be fair for those who don't have my experience" so, I am not dissapointed at all, I am actually happy because earlier in this thread Jane- herself- pointed out that we (older than 35) are eligible for the seed fund (100USD) and I as not expecting that. I am old enough to pay my plane tickets to WC and I can contact any Social Innovator of my choise and request their help. Win.win-win :-)

Fourth of July on the Lake

This past weekend was the annual celebration at the lake house in Connecticut. It is amazing that the lake is still so clear and beautiful after all these years. The watershed association has done a wonderful job protecting these waters from the damaging effects of development. The wood grill was finally ready to cook on, so we didn't miss the propane tank fueled grill anymore. The food actually tasted fresher than in the past and was easy to keep fueled.Dad was very proud of the solar hybrid…See More

Future

FutureToday is 2020/1/1. It is just like yesterday. The war is still continuing. It has started since 2010. In 2010, that year was a horrible year. Almost every energy ran out. Every country’s governments were crushed down at the same time. There were riots everywhere. All of the big company’s bosses were killed xdeadx in the riots. Troops fought each other everywhere. Food was bought up xawayx at once. There were no more food supplies in any shops. The economy was all crushed down. All the…See More
