Urgent Evoke

A crash course in changing the world.

EDIT: This post is now redundant as the rules have been changed. Hallelujah! And thanks to the PTBs for listening....

Thanks for this feedback. Points all well taken. In the spirit of EVOKE -- we listen, learn, adapt and evolve. EVOKATION prizes now open to all
agents of any age. See blog --

inspired by all of you.

Orignila message reads:

... and discovered that I CANNOT submit an Evokation.

http://www.urgentevoke.com/page/rules-for-playing-evoke

3.1. Conference Fellowship – Young Innovators
3.1.3. ELIGIBILITY: Player must have been born on January 1, 1980 or later.

3.2. Mentorships
3.2.3.3. All players must have been born on January 1, 1975 or later

In order to find this page, I had to click on a link in the "Happy Evokation Day" post that is tucked away on the front page. I only looked for it because I received an email with the fabulously informative content:
Urgent Evoke
A crash course in changing the world.
A message to all members of Urgent Evoke

Due to the formatting of the page, the rest of the message is hidden.

When I started this project, I was initially put off by the fact that it wasn't clear what I was expected to do, and I subsequently wrote an article about this fact. In my Evoke 1.5 discussion, I also asked about the Terms and Conditions - something I had actually read.

Clicking the About button at the top of the page takes you to a blog which doesn't list these rules, but does have the following messsage at the side. I've highlighted the bit that is misleading:

EVOKE is free to play and open to anyone, anywhere.

The game begins on March 3, 2010. Players can join the game at any time.

Players who successfully complete ten game challenges in ten weeks will be able to claim their honors: Certified World Bank Institute Social
Innovator – Class of 2010.

Top players will also earn online mentorships with experienced social innovators and business leaders from around the world, and scholarships
to share their vision for the future at the EVOKE Summit in Washington
DC.

EVOKE was developed by the World Bank Institute, the learning and knowledge arm of the World Bank Group, and directed by alternate reality
game master Jane McGonigal.

Nowehere visible does it say that there are age restrictions. I have made a serious effort to find out what the rules are, but nobody bothered to put them in a place where I could find them. I have tried to be proactive about addressing this issue, but nobody seems to care. I really want to protest the way in which the managers of this site have failed to communicate clearly. It's just not good enough.

EDIT: Jane kindly replied to this very quickly, with a clarification.

At any rate, if you sincerely want mentorship, my advice is to submit your evokation and say exactly which mentor(s) you want to work with and why, and we will ensure that they at least see it.

My own greatest happiness comes from being the best person I can be, and that includes open communication, as I express all of the most valuable things I become aware of in life so that everyone is given the information they need to make good decisions about what to do with their energy, time, and other resources. So that's what I do whenever possible, communicate. :-)

Ternura, age doesn't have anything to do with whether you can afford to travel or can use some guidance in creating a great thing...

I'm gonna have to give these news to many of my students that aren't within the age range,
It's good that at least we get to know the rules at the end of the game.:)

Also, Nicholas, I realize now that that was a bad analogy, since most guys aren't in it for the long term committed thing. But, unless you're a robot, I can guarantee that you've got feelings. Even the Dalai Lama spoke about being sad when a good friend of his died. Loss is supposed to give you strong feelings of sadness and maybe a little anger, as it's there to guide you in understanding yourself. Buddhism, or at least the Buddhism I've learned, doesn't teach you to ignore or repress emotions, it teaches you to appreciate them and be compassionate with them. And my work with psychology and neurology makes it clear that expressing emotions (a collection of chemicals, really) is crucial to returning the system to a more balanced and healthy state of wh***-brain thinking.

Turil, I am sorry it's just that when I was young, age had EVERYTHING to do with the possibilty or impossibility of traveling, starting from parents permission ending up on whether they pay half of the ticket and you sell enough lemonade for the other half...... or you stay on the ground :-)

Turil, I'm certainly trying to find a woman to be in it for the long term, but dwelling on not finding that after a relationship ends doesn't help that happen. I do get upset, and in fact had a depression problem when I was younger from letting everything get to me too much. It was cyclical and I finally figured out how to break the cycle...through this shift in perspective. I appreciate your discussions, so please don't take what I say as "this is how it is", I'm just letting you know my perspective, and I enjoy hearing yours as well :)

well, in any case, I hope that all of this discrepancy can be cleared up peacefully
Comment by Turil Cronburg on May 13, 2010 at 3:39pm
Nicholas, yes, dwelling on the past is not very useful. Talking about the present and future is, however, pretty much the best way to get to a better future, is it not? Isn't that the point of this adventure?

Fourth of July on the Lake

This past weekend was the annual celebration at the lake house in Connecticut. It is amazing that the lake is still so clear and beautiful after all these years. The watershed association has done a wonderful job protecting these waters from the damaging effects of development. The wood grill was finally ready to cook on, so we didn't miss the propane tank fueled grill anymore. The food actually tasted fresher than in the past and was easy to keep fueled.Dad was very proud of the solar hybrid…See More

Stinging Nettle

In this blog post I will focus on a plant that is abundant in our nature, and which is immensely nutritious. It's of course the Stinging Nettle. Let's start with the chemical constituents of this plant:37 % Non-Nitrogen-Extracts19 - 29 % Ash9 - 21 % Fiber4 % Fat22 % ProteinOnce the leaves are drid, their protein content can reach an astounding 40 %, which is much higher than beef, which even under the best of circ**stances can never exceed 31 % protein. In addition the Stinging Nettle consists…See More

It is 7'oclock, I was late home from work due to an assignment that i wanted to get ahead on. By the time I get home I am feeling extremley tired and I cannot be bothered to make a proper meal. All of the out of date foodstuffs have been automaticaly thrown away by the fridge, they will be recycled tomorrow as animal feed or something. I see i have organic local eggs and some local cheese. Future

FutureToday is 2020/1/1. It is just like yesterday. The war is still continuing. It has started since 2010. In 2010, that year was a horrible year. Almost every energy ran out. Every country’s governments were crushed down at the same time. There were riots everywhere. All of the big company’s bosses were killed xdeadx in the riots. Troops fought each other everywhere. Food was bought up xawayx at once. There were no more food supplies in any shops. The economy was all crushed down. All the…See More

public servants

The exchange works directly for state and public workers and servants. It gives them credit in exchange for the amount of public work they contribute to the community. The more constructive they are based off a base rate the more credit they recieve.
