I have never been one who is big on hero worship. Maybe it's because of my introverted nature, or perhaps my cynical outlook on things. Whatever the case, I can rarely see past the individual motivations of any given person. An idea, however, can be much larger than any single person.
A single concept or idea can inspire more people to innovation, lead a larger population to action, and bring ruin or prosperity to a greater area than any single person can hope for. One person may be the birth of an idea, or an idea be born of a group, but the idea can easily grow beyond those people. More often they are born of great social strife or need. When a crisis looms on the horizon that can effect many people at once, or there is a great outcry of social inequality, they can almost spring up overnight. And once they are born, once they have taken root in people hearts and minds, then they are impossible to uproot and destroy. The more the current system struggles, the stronger the idea becomes. When an idea becomes strong enough, large enough, then it gains the power to transcend its creation and bring about great change and innovation all in its own. Ideas are worth my respect and admiration, and there are many potentially great issues just over the horizon in the world.
There are many organizations dedicated to the spreading of ideas and innovation already in place. TED is one of the more obvious ones, and I have followed it for years. Videos are uploaded regularly there, from people around the world. The ideas and innovations they put forth are then spread to others around the world. I would greatly recommend anyone who has never been there to check it out.
