A crash course in changing the world.
I am from Vancouver, BC, Canada- an area that is right on an earthquake fault line. I have experienced a few earthquakes already in my life, but none of them major. As I was growing up, earthquake preparedness was taught to us in school and we were warned that one day, Vancouver would experience a major earthquake. It was just a matter of time.
If this crisis hit, I'm pretty sure my city would, quite literally, crumble and fall. I don't think society would be properly prepared for the inevitable. A resource like Ushahidi to track urgent info like earthquake damage would prove very helpful in Vancouver- assuming people could still access the internet (though, now that I think about it, this may not be at all likely...)
We could still track things like:
-Where to get fresh water; where it was unsafe to drink the water
-Where to find food, clothing, and shelter
-Information about school closures, which roads were still open, and how we could get medical attention if we needed it
Urgent information and resources to collect would include:
-Names and locations of doctors and medical facilities
-Pages to tell people how to get fresh water, or make it themselves
-How people could escape the city to stay with friends or family in neighbouring areas that were less affected
etc. etc. This can keep getting updated as I think of more and more things. It would be good to collaborate with others on this issue as well...
