I suppose some may call me a victim of current economic challenges in the first world. On Sunday, I was laid off with just over a weeks notice and no real savings to speak of. Sure, playing victim is easy and some people even thrive on the "poor me" scenario. This, my friends, is a glorious opportunity. Finding this game couldn't have been more timely; I now have all day every day to focus my energy on a much bigger picture than I was seeing before. It is a beautiful chance to see things outside myself and really dig in.
I rent a basement suite. The selling feature on this place was the fact that I get my own garden space in the back yard. MY OWN GARDEN!!! I've never had my own garden! I've always lived in apartments and truthfully, never thought much about the importance of knowing how to grow my own food until the last couple of years. It's almost spring time, the beginning of growing season here in Calgary and here I am with a little garden plot and very little gardening skills. As such, I've decided to barter. In exchange for the knowledge I need to grow my own food this year, I'm giving away part of my garden space to a friend who has no yard of her own.
I'm so excited about this project! I'll keep adding pictures as time progresses. Right now with lots of ice still in the yard, the garden is untouched this year so far:
