Urgent Evoke

A crash course in changing the world.

I'm shadowing Jane McGonigal because she's shipped a game much like the one I've been working on for years. Jane McGonigal spoke at TED to present her game, Evoke, as an example of how gamers will change the world. I've been working on a game like this called Empowerment for the last 5 years with very similar CMS-based real-world mission mechanics and Jane's proven the concept with Evoke. I'm going to meet her at some point in the next few months to show her Primer and ask her to be one of my mentors to help make Primer a reality.

Sounds interesting. What is CMS?

A CMS is a content management system, like the one that powers this site. Most sites are now powered by CMS systems like Drupal (I use this myself, http://ww.drupal.org), Wordpress, Joomla, Plone, etc.
EVOKE is using the commonplace "CMS" functions like posting blogs to power a game about real life very creatively. SF0 and EmpowerThyself's Missionpedia are based on the same premise: Do something real and post a blog about it to complete "Missions" which are themselves just special web posts that users can "accept" and "complete" by posting their own special responses. This is very different from traditional games where you win by moving some kind of arbitrary character or pushing buttons. A CMS game has a bit of a learning curve for people used to blasting things in games.

The game I'm making, Primer, marries the CMS-based real-world system like Evokes with a fully immersive 3D MMO environment that ties the experiences inside the 3D game to the real-world missions outside. I think Evoke could benefit a lot from something like this too.

"A CMS game has a bit of a learning curve for people used to blasting things in games." So true!! Maybe in the future we will find a way to marry the two kinds of games, I like real-time feedback and responsive graphics as well... I also hope that CMS games will become more commonplace and the learning curve will get less steep all the time! But that's a great way to describe it (and I adore SF0 as well!) Glad you hopped over to get a taste of EVOKE and earn your spot as a founding member while there's still time! ^_^

Is your platform open source? Ive been musing on a Evoke Spinoff called hack, kind of like Lifehacker+Robin Hood+Network support. Would be cool to have a platform for it^_^

Primer is indeed going to be open source and could lend itself nicely to use as a framework for Evoke gameplay. I could tell you more about it in person as there's no real information on our site about the project yet.

Perhaps we should meet up some time and I could give you a demo of the game platform so far.

It's a ways away from done or being a platform ready for Evoke, but I would like to show you the roadmap and see if it will be of use to Evoke.

I was doing a post about Ushahidi, and realized that the activist nature of my game would go really well with that platform. Also, I would love for you to contact me! It would be a pleasure to share ideas.

Gabriel, I'd love to know more about your game idea. Feel free to email me at openprimer@gmail.com

Here's a bit more info about it as my EVOKATION: Primer project
Comment by Sarah Shaw Tatoun on May 13, 2010 at 1:48am
Oh, okay. Well, another problem I see is that a content management system has a bit of a learning curve for everyone who hasn't used content management systems before. I've set up my own blogs and websites, but even so I must say I've found Evoke kind of confusing at times-- and friends of mine who have less experience found it completely baffling and quickly gave up. Of course I'm in an older age group and I'm sure to a lot of younger people it's easy enough.

But I'd be very interested to see what you've developed, Alex. Please let me know if you get a beta site going!

Fourth of July on the Lake

This past weekend was the annual celebration at the lake house in Connecticut. It is amazing that the lake is still so clear and beautiful after all these years. The watershed association has done a wonderful job protecting these waters from the damaging effects of development. The wood grill was finally ready to cook on, so we didn't miss the propane tank fueled grill anymore. The food actually tasted fresher than in the past and was easy to keep fueled.Dad was very proud of the solar hybrid…See More

Stinging Nettle

In this blog post I will focus on a plant that is abundant in our nature, and which is immensely nutritious. It's of course the Stinging Nettle. In addition the Stinging Nettle consists…See More

It is 7'oclock, I was late home from work due to an assignment that i wanted to get ahead on. By the time I get home I am feeling extremley tired and I cannot be bothered to make a proper meal. All of the out of date foodstuffs have been automaticaly thrown away by the fridge, they will be recycled tomorrow as animal feed or something. I see i have organic local eggs and some local cheese. Future

FutureToday is 2020/1/1. It is just like yesterday. The war is still continuing. It has started since 2010. In 2010, that year was a horrible year. Almost every energy ran out. Every country’s governments were crushed down at the same time. There were riots everywhere. All of the big company’s bosses were killed xdeadx in the riots. Troops fought each other everywhere. Food was bought up xawayx at once. There were no more food supplies in any shops. The economy was all crushed down. All the…See More

public servants

The exchange works directly for state and public workers and servants. It gives them credit in exchange for the amount of public work they contribute to the community. The more constructive they are based off a base rate the more credit they recieve.
