IMAGINE 9 - A Non-medical Way To Solve Pandemics

It is the 20th of May, 2011, and a new flu has emerged. It was declared a flu pandemic on the 14th, 6 days ago. Unfortunately, the medical community has not been able to identify what kind of flu it is. They predict the identification within 30 days. In the meantime, is it up to us non-medical workers to sort things out.

We have to use our logic and reasoning instead of our irrational panic to make our decisions. In 6 days, there have only been 5 people that have been infected, but they don't show any signs of dying; their symptoms are similar to those of the common flu. However, the media has been blowing up over the supposed "pandemic"

I know a few ways of dismantling this misconception. Firstly, I have contacted the computer engineers to set up a website that logically shows that the pandemic is not as bad as previously thought. I also contacted my town's paper to put a few articles on the myths of the flu, maybe written by some comedians.I can then contact my premier to make a public speech on the incident. The mayor could do, but not many people attend those meetings in my city.

Teachers at school can have a parent/teacher night to explain to the parents how to use proper sanitation to lower the amounts of infections during the pandemic. Chefs can send out pamphlets to explain to customers how they are properly sanitizing their foods.

We could also write letters to the local paper, ensuring that they do not over-exaggerate the claims of the pandemic, if any.

These measures could greatly reduce the amount of panic that the media would eventually instill, thus reducing the spread of the virus, or any psychosomatics responses that the panic could have on others.

add to that that the actual swine flu vaccine has bee officially classified by the European Union
as a biological weapon...

Good one, reduce the fear and educate, well done!

Hmm, interesting Sarah. Are you saying that it was created in a laboratory? That would be very lucrative seeing that they then have to sell vaccines.
Comment by Sarah O.Connor Panamericana on May 3, 2010 at 6:21pm
It was certainly created in a laboratory as all vaccines, but no vaccine earned
the distinction of been categorized as a bioweapon before,
regarding the virus it has been said by experts in the field that it was a lab virus,
derived from the same virus that caused the 1918 pandemic,
which is appropriately classified as a bioweapon and was being stored
frozen in US military bioweapons development labs.
In addition the protection that the vaccine provides is for a virus that
doesn't exist anymore, because by the time they make the vaccine,
the virus already has mutated.

Oops, pardon my misreading of your comment. I thought you wrote that "swine flu" was classified, not "swine flu virus". What I interpreted was that the H1N1 virus itself was made in a laboratory.

Thanks for the history lesson :) I'm glad I'm not the only one into conspiracy theories.

And the thing about the vaccine is so true, vaccines are virtually useless by the time they are released. Besides, truly healthy people don't really need vaccines because their immune system is just fine. It's just that we don't have truly healthy people where I'm from (Canada), and living close to the United States doesn't help.

Daniel, what technique would you use to calm people down so that they are ready to actually listen to logical information?
Comment by Daniel Pisani on May 3, 2010 at 10:43pm
Interesting question Turil,
I'm looking this up because, to be honest, I haven't thought about that.
Here it says to not react to the situation yourself. People often change to match each others behaviors. However, that could only work in face-to-face situations.
Here's an idea; setting up a phone line for concerned citizens, where we can reassure them about the situation at hand, where we can actually pay attention to what they have to say and actually listen to their concerns. Having someone to talk can lower someone's fear of the issue.

Hope that answered your question.

I like that solution! Having an online version of the hotline would be good to, as an option.

In my city, we have this 311 service where people call 311 for non-emergency reports, where you can talk to a real human at city hall and just kind of vent about something that you think the city might be able to fix, or just to report a general problem (broken traffic signals, sidewalks that haven't been cleared of snow, unexpected fireworks going off, etc.), and that seems to have really made people feel better about their communities. So I imagine that kind of thing could be used for a kind of mild crisis hotline/info-line as well.

Did you take the vaccine Turil?

Fourth of July on the Lake

This past weekend was the annual celebration at the lake house in Connecticut. It is amazing that the lake is still so clear and beautiful after all these years. The watershed association has done a wonderful job protecting these waters from the damaging effects of development. The wood grill was finally ready to cook on, so we didn't miss the propane tank fueled grill anymore. The food actually tasted fresher than in the past and was easy to keep fueled.Dad was very proud of the solar hybrid…See More

Stinging Nettle

In this blog post I will focus on a plant that is abundant in our nature, and which is immensely nutritious. It's of course the Stinging Nettle. Future

FutureToday is 2020/1/1. It is just like yesterday. The war is still continuing. It has started since 2010. In 2010, that year was a horrible year. Almost every energy ran out. Every country’s governments were crushed down at the same time. There were riots everywhere. All of the big company’s bosses were killed xdeadx in the riots. Troops fought each other everywhere. Food was bought up xawayx at once. There were no more food supplies in any shops. The economy was all crushed down. All the…See More

public servants

The exchange works directly for state and public workers and servants. It gives them credit in exchange for the amount of public work they contribute to the community. The more constructive they are based off a base rate the more credit they recieve.
