A crash course in changing the world.

Where would i like to be in 10 years?

At the moment i am studying Buisness and Computer Games at Uni, i know computer games dosnt sound like it can but it can! In 10 years I want to have made up my own social enterprise company that make games for helping children to learn, as many children are visual learners and are struggling from books. Then I want to take the profits from this company to send as many free copys of the learning games and computers as i can to thrid world countrys.

So when i get the call from Tokyo in 10 years time I would like to be handing out some of these games persnally to children.

Talk to Mike Yacci at RIT. He's doing research in this area.

to follow up on Schereschewsky: also check out (watch the video) and to see all the games.

I don't think we need separate teachers for this, we need to support the teachers we have to learn. I am studying Inclusive Education and there are a lot of disadvantages to segregating kids with special needs.

@caroline meeks
this question is subject to debate.
I personaly think teachers can't possibly manage a large number of young students when ( sometimes ) 3 or 4 of them don't seem to learn anything and have negative behaviour in class.
Talking with an other adult, who is neither a parent or a 'normal' teacher often enables them to express their problems and reintegrate the class in a positive way. But it is true that it can also lead to some sort of an addiction or other problems.

anyway, we don't need separate teachers to use computers, that's the sure.

sugerlabs = good idea, good design!

Schereschewsky,

Your right, its very tough to do inclusive education well. What we do about educating the hardest to educate 20% of our children is a fascinating and important problem. One of us needs to write a blog post about it and give its own thread to discuss.

Definitely! I've got limited knowledge about the problem, but be sure i'll read your post with great interest if you do write it :)

I agree completely that video games can help people learn. There is this very game/site for one. Also, I remember learning how to spell words, and match sounds to written letters when I was very young in the 80's on a video game-type console.There are also games like Where In The World Is Carmen SanDiego and the wh*** Dora the Explorer series. Your idea is not utterly new but it is lucrative, as well as ripe for exploration and development. Kudos! I gave you +1 creativity.

Hi Hannah,

Sounds awesome. Definitely something the world needs more of.

What I'd like to see is a combination of computer gaming and realworld gaming.
Here in South Africa mobile phones are far more prevalent than computers. A learning game that combined traditional board gaming or roleplaying with a mobile component would be a really viable way of using games in education.

What do you guys think?

Educational games have lots of potential Hannah. Maybe you could group together with some of your fellow EVOKE agents and think about how you might use educational games in developing countries - working with the constraints associated with the lives of these people. Drop me an email with some evidence that you are rolling with this and there will be +50 collaboration points in it for you. I have given you +10 spark for igniting interest within the network. :-)

Let me add that I think that Charlie's idea merits further work. I feel another EVOKE clan forming! :-)

Fourth of July on the Lake

This past weekend was the annual celebration at the lake house in Connecticut. It is amazing that the lake is still so clear and beautiful after all these years. The watershed association has done a wonderful job protecting these waters from the damaging effects of development.The wood grill was finally ready to cook on, so we didn't miss the propane tank fueled grill anymore. The food actually tasted fresher than in the past and was easy to keep fueled.Dad was very proud of the solar hybrid…See More

Stinging Nettle

In this blog post I will focus on a plant that is abundant in our nature, and which is immensely nutritious. It's of course the Stinging Nettle. Future

FutureToday is 2020/1/1. It is just like yesterday. The war is still continuing. It has started since 2010. In 2010, that year was a horrible year. Almost every energy ran out. Every country’s governments were crushed down at the same time. There were riots everywhere. All of the big company’s bosses were killed xdeadx in the riots. Troops fought each other everywhere. Food was bought up xawayx at once. There were no more food supplies in any shops. The economy was all crushed down. All the…See More

public servants

The exchange works directly for state and public workers and servants. It gives them credit in exchange for the amount of public work they contribute to the community. The more constructive they are based off a base rate the more credit they recieve.
