2020 Dinner
I pull my chair up to the table. I looked down at my plate. They don't make them as big as they used to anymore. My wife handed out the rations and placed them on everyone's plate.
I missed the taste of steak, potatoes, and fries. I was not going to complain this time, I am just thankful we have a meal to eat. Don't get me wrong, they have improved the artificial flavoring. The texture of the rations, it's just not the same. "Get out your supper pill Junior," my wife said. Junior is our only son. He is a very well mannered young boy at the age of 10. "Mom, do I have to?"Junior replied. He looked at me and I nodded my head. He reached into his pocket and pulled out the bottle of pills. "We need that for our daily vitamins now, with the food supply low we have to rely on modern medicine." I placed my pill next to my ration. I always waited until the very end to take my pill. It replaced dessert for me in my mind. We finished our meal and my wife collected the dishes and headed over towards the sink. I made my way over to the new "healthy" furniture in the living room. As I sat down Junior ran towards me. "Dad, I miss what was it like before the storm." I smiled and patted my son on the head. He was referring to last years crop season. The winters were long and and fall storms were very damaging. No one could get the crops out in time, even staying up into the late hours. It was a famine that struck all across the world. It hurt business everywhere, due to the limit in supplies. Prices rose, stock markets crashed, and the "Global FOOD" crisis center created the ration system. They told everyone it would only be for a little while until the EVOKE network finds a way to fix the problem. Every time I heard the word "evoke" I smiled. I used to be one of the founding members of the organization. I served my time and had helped solve a lot of problems. Just as the thought left my mind the phone rang. "Honey, the phone is for you. He said it's an important message but he wouldn't tell me his name." She handed over the phone. "Hello? This is Jake. May I ask...."
"There is no time for talk Jake. We need you again, how soon can you get to Washington D.C.?"
I was shocked. I had not heard that voice in a long time. I replied, "Alch? Alchemy is that you?"
"The old team will meet you there this Saturday. No later than 5:00. Good luck. "
Click. Just like that he was gone, as usual. I have never seen the man, he is a myth to us. I grabbed my suitcase and started throwing clothes into it. My wife came in the room and said, "Honey, what is wrong?" I could not reply, a million thoughts were running through my head.
"I have to go, it's him again. He said, he has a plan."
