The event is the commission of Auckland's first full scale tidal power plant. With this event, New Zealand becomes the second nation in the world to get to 100% sustainable electricity production. Our four geothermal plants are now at full capacity along with increased efficiency in our Hydro schemes we have exceeded our ability to handle peak load from non-fossil fuel sources. We still have a few gas fired plants idle held in reserve in case of low rainfall years.
Our major coal fired plant is down for retrofit of CO2 scrubbing and integration with a brick manufacturing unit producing calcium carbonate bricks for building using seawater and the CO2 waste. This will be used to power an increasing manufacturing sector fueled by demand of consumer goods produced under sustainable practices.
This carbon capture and storage technology has been recently gifted by the United States and Australia to India and China as gesture of good faith and its implementation is now heavily subsidised by the newly established Global fund. This gesture has instigated a new era of trust between nations.
The possibility of national democratic elections being held in China is no longer a pipe dream.
