On Water Day 2020, as the sun rises, EVOKE agents all over the developed world are setting up wells. The wells are huge stands in the centers of towns where volunteers wait with different sized weights. Hundreds of thousands of people who have running water in their houses are going to use the wells today.
As the sun rises a few adventurous souls arrive first. They come with their buckets and the volunteers help to load them with weights. For each person in their family the participant must carry 33 lbs, roughly the equivalent weight to 4 gallons of water (which is an estimate of how much water a person uses in a day). They participants stagger slightly at the weight, and then begin the walk home. Some will be back in an hour, to carry more for their families.
Drivers passing by stop to stare, to ask what it is that they are carrying in buckets, and the participants reply: sim-pathy.
As a reminder that running water is a privilege, and one that needs to be extended to the entire world, we will carry the weight of water.
