A pandemic is a frightening thing. Chaos and misinformation can run rampant. However, as we've established, those kinds of things can be prevented with some prior planning and preparation. Prepare a
dark site and get your information ready. However, things can still go wrong. You still have emergencies on the ground. Your site might go down. What do you do then?
Recruit everyone you can find! A thousand people doing one small task can accomplish much more than you think. Look back at a past mission and recruit citizens of your city as reporters on the ground. Get them to use Ushahidi. Keep information flowing. It reduces the risk of spreading misinformation and thereby impeding recovery efforts.
Look to the airwaves. Use services like
Groundcrew and rely on peoples' pre-existing social networks (offline or online) to gather people with similar skills and coordinate. Enable everyone with relevant skills—not just doctors!—to organize themselves and contribute to the greater good.
Finally, do whatever you can to help locally! Recruit your neighbors and see what you can do in your area to prevent the pandemic from spreading. Not only are you helping yourselves, you're helping your city. Due to
herd immunity, the more people near you that don't have the flu, the less chance that the flu spreads. Who knows, you could end up being a human barrier against the pandemic!
