we are eating soup. we aren't out of the winter yet and all we have stored up are beans and lentils and potatoes. so we eat soup. we buy the celery and carrots from the store (our carrots haven't come up yet) but the meat and the the chicken stock come from one of our hens (may she rest in peace)
we are those who come to community dinner at the sparrowhaus which is a sort of community residence/homestead in Milwaukie that was once my home and will always be my home. Community dinner has been going on for roughly twelve years now, every other sunday, a way for my family and all our friends to get together and enjoy good food, and a way for us to use all the food that Joel grows in the garden.
the soup is not all we have, there is pasta from our friends (for the vegetarians), the sauce coming from canned tomatoes and last years onions plus the meager fruits of the grocery store. there is also cornbread, but it's a little over cooked.
later this year, when our tomatoes are ripe and our Basil is mature we shall eat like kings. we shall make lovely pizzas and a vibrant array of pasta sauces and salads, we may even cook up a pheasant from my grandparent's house. but now, just coming out of yet another cold hard winter, we eat soup, and think of sunnier days ahead.
