A crash course in changing the world.
Every minute somewhere in the world a woman dies in pregnancy or childbirth. In my country Kenya, 22 women die each day from pregnancy related complications - 80% of these deaths are preventable.
At AMREF where I work, we have choosen today - International Womens Day - to remember and honor all the women who die during childbirth. It is shameful that maternal death stands as the greatest inequity of the 21st century. Globally, the commitment to reduce maternal mortality by 75% - a target of Millennium Development Goal (MDG) 5 - remains grossly off track. From the UKs Million Mums Campaign to the Free Healthcare for Pregnant Women in Kenya to doc**entary film about safe motherhood in Burkina Faso, to the development of a Safe Motherhood and Newborn Health Bill in Nepal, many individuals and organisations are working to reverse this trend.
The Global White Ribbon Alliance (WRA) for Safe Motherhood promotes increased public awareness of the need to make pregnancy and childbirth safe for all women and newborns in the developing, as well as, developed countries. WRAs global ambassador in Naomi Campbell whose is famous (or infamous) for her penchant for violence. But today I honor Naomi Campbell for using her beauty, glamour and voice to speak for the voiceless and help put maternal health on the global stage.
